Word is Capello was at the game to watch Arteta but he failed a fitness test. Fancy Arteta donning an England shirt, no kidding.

Apparently he could be selcted to play for this country under the 5 year residency rule which is a new one on me.(y)

Probably stands more chance than playing for Spain.

Hasn't he already stated he would never play for England?

I believe he has. He would have a slim chance of playing for england due to the big four factor of gerrards, lampards and now barry along that line anyway.

When he plays for spain, that is the "Mikel Arteta day"

Pretty sure he has said he wont do it.

Just my personal feelings though, you should play for your country and no other. It was like the clamber to get Almunia in the England team, if hes not good enough for his country then why is he good enough for England

Arguably Goat his country has turned its back on him.

Just thought I would mention about Arteta, would anyone fancy him turning out for England?

No, no no.

He's fcukin brilliant for us don't get me wrong, but England ? NO NO NO

I would have thought someone from Burnley would understand this.

Almunia isn't good for any team IMO. He's a joke of a goal keeper in my books.

but yes the loyalty does count and I expect Mikel to get into the spanish squad some day before his career is over

Against a Gentleman's Agreement between the Home Nations FA's. All of the Home Nations have stated they will not play naturalised players. Purely because of the fact that through the pan-UK "British" citizenship that if Arteta is eligible for England then he is also eligible for Northern Ireland.

He really deserves to be in the Spanish squad though. I understand that they have a brilliant midfield now, but surely Mikel deserves to be in the squad at least?

He's Spanish I'm afraid, so whilst the rules might say he can, he really shouldn't. Bad enough our cricket and rugby teams being filled with non-Englishmen without the football team doing it as well. We're not the Republic of Ireland!
