Slow news day then?

Cant see it myself, from the noises he's made before I would rate it as a doubtful, and after they dismantled England you can clearly see they've got talent in that area.

If he keeps up playing how he is then I think he will get a sniff but is not likely to be anything more than a squad player for Spain.

Back to the England thing, I still wouldnt support them. Even with the handsome one playing for them.

GHOST?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The way he plays now,
and the midfielders that England have,

he'd probably be a guaranteed starter for the world cup, England have no-one like him!

cannot see it happening though.

I hope it doesn't tbh. I don't believe in players changing allegiances/nationality like that at such a late stage. Plus as good as Spain are and we weren't the other night, I don't want their cast offs. A foreign manager is one thing, 'foreign' players is another!! :(

Phil I know what your saying but he really isn't a cast off. He simply hasn't been given a chance because we are not a Champions league team how biased is that. Sorry but that sucks big ones.:@

That maybe a factor but I posted an article from Toffeeweb that mentions the Arteta call up and it has been printed in the media in the run up to the England friendly.

By all accounts I think the Spanish coach said he was going to give Arteta a cap but mentioned that it would be pointless exercise because he'd drop him for Fabregas when he comes back from injury anyway.

Bit harsh but the talant in that national team is ridiculous and Arteta aint no spring chicken compared to the other 20 year olds in the squad.

He'll never get a call up. But if he was at a Champions League club 2-3 seasons ago....he'd have a few caps IMO. And Arteta playing for England wouldnt be fair on the lad.

Foreigners should not be allowed to play for England.
Not much point in having an England team if they're not English.

Can't see him playing for England, he's never mentioned it. And to be honest, with Spain's midfield, it's not THAT much of a surprise he's having trouble getting in.

Defo a slow news day.

And I don't support England either (since they failed to qualify), just the Everton players in the team when they make it.

The thing is we have not had a genuine English national team since we started employing managers and coaches from abroard, it's only a matter of time before we follow other countries and play forign born nationals in the England team.

Slow news day then, so if we really wanted to open a can of worms the question is should we have national teams for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Technically the 'home countries' are part of one national state, the United Kingdom. There is no such thing as English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish citizenship. We have a dispensation from FIFA to operate the way we do, but what if that changed? There is a case being made for a UK football team to play in the London Olympics. What if that then becomes a catalyst for FIFA to act to withdraw our dispensation?

What do you all think.

Well not wanting to derail the thread, but FIFA have promised that a GB Olympic team for the 2012 games wouldn't affect things like the number of teams we can put into europe, our positions on the FIFA board, seperate entries into World Cup/Euros etc.

I'm not too knowledgeable on geographicy/law, but although we make up a 'national state' does each country not have its own seperate identity still? Scotland have their own governments/assemblies don't they?

It's a muddy area and I also am not too knowledgeble on the law. I am English, but I am a UK citizen. Each country has it's own identity and have local governments/assemblies apart from parliament except for England, but we are all UK citizens.

My point is that at some point FIFA could to act to withdraw our dispensation leaving us with a UK team. The erosion of national teams by employing non nationals and the formation of a UK football team could be seen as a stepping stone for a more permanant change.

I think it's a shame that good footballer's, like Arteta, will probably never get to play for their national side, but it just seems 'wrong' to put him in ahead of English born players, even if those players aren't as good as him.
Surely, if this course is taken by FIFA and the FA there would be no point in us having a national team.
