Arshavin.....

I think Arshavin was "just what we needed" when we didn't realise quite how good he was.

I reckon most Evertonians (myself included) thought he was a cracking little attacker who was just not quite made for the very top table... so he was an ideal pick for us. He wasn't young, so a transfer scramble was reasonably unlikely, and he'd mentioned us in an interview. He was someone we could realistically take and would fit into our side rather neatly. "Just what we need."

Now, however, we have all discovered that he's quite a bit better than we thought. This means he's no longer "just what we need". He's not that perfect fit (both on the field, and financially) we all thought he was. He would still light up Goodison Park, but now - in terms of cold hard cash, and this being his 'one big move' - he's a pipe dream in the same way that the world's top players are a pipe dream.

"Just what we need" no more.

Sorry mate, but I find that a little defeatest, although I'm sure its not what you meant.

How can a player be too good for us? Anybody at the moment who is better than what we have is a perfect fit, because that is taking us to the next level, which is what we need.

The president of the Russian Football Federation has revealed that man-of-the-moment Andrei Arshavin ‘dreams’ of playing for Barcelona.
The little Russian playmaker has been the revelation of Euro 2008, producing man-of-the-match performances in his country’s wins over Sweden and Holland en route to the semi-finals.
Arshavin has been strongly linked with a move to England and Arsenal, Manchester City, Everton and Newcastle are all reportedly interested in the Zenit St Petersburg star who will leave Russia this summer.
However, the 27-year-old’s displays in Austria and Switzerland will have placed him on many a club’s wishlist and a move to Spain could be on the agenda.
Barcelona are looking to overhaul their forward line with Ronaldinho, Deco and Samuel Eto’o all on the move and Vitaly Butko claims Arshavin is eyeing a move to Camp Nou.
"Andrei has a dream to play for Barcelona," Butko told Sport. "It is, together with the Russian national team, his favourite team.
"He could easily play and show all his quality at Barcelona. Andrei doesn't have less quality than players like Deco."

I just hope they dont go for him. Or its bye, bye, Ruski.

You're right I don't mean it like that - but that's not what I said. I didn't say he's too good for us. I'm saying he's now in a bracket, in terms of apparant ability, to play at the top table - to play for his 'dream team' - which seems to be Barca. It's the quality we didn't know he had (and we didn't!) that makes him a player attractive to teams like Barca, with whom we cannot compete financially. Doesn't make him too good a player for us.

We all thought he was the perfect fit across the board. He was what we needed team-wise, he was rather good, he was a relative unknown (i.e not bound for a top top side), and he wasn't going to cost the Earth. It was the perfect accessible package for a team in Everton's position. So we all got excited at the prospect. Turns out we were a little ahead of ourselves.

Time has come

Arshavin admits it may be time to leave Russian football and claims his dream would be to join a Spanish club.
"Perhaps the time has come, yes," Arshavin told AS when asked whether he would move to another European league.
"I know that I have offers from England and Germany, but what I really want is to play in the Primera Liga.
"It's the championship that I have always followed, I like how football is played there.
"But for now, I have no offers from Spain."
The schemer's international team-mate Roman Pavlyuchenko has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Arshavin feels there are many more Russia players who will have caught the eye at Euro 2008.
He added: "There are many good players in my country, but people are now discovering us.
"It's not only me. This tournament is an opportunity for us."

PLEASE BE A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS !!!

Just read that myself and i've gotta say i'm gutted. Its sraight from the horses mouth as well so there is no doubt spain is his preferred destination. Fair enough, but it just shows how much utter shyte the papers print, for the last 2 weeks since his first game, all i've heard is how he wants to play in England, really builds you up hoping he'll come but at least now we know it aint gonna happen.

Dont be countin them chickens yet matey.

I wouldnt usually, but those are his words, clear as day. Spains where he wants to be, and based on his euro's performance he can go wherever he wants. There wont be a team in europe that wont want him, especially if he is around the £10million area, the guy is pure class and has proven that he can do it on the big stage, which is the only real gamble when buying from a lower quality league.

Do you think theirs a chance his agent has told him to say this? As now english clubs will have to break the bank to get him.......£20m an 75K+ a week. This is what happends in football.

It's all bollox.
