Zenit spark £20m Arshavin scramble

The Russian star - rated at around £20million - had a brilliant domestic campaign last season helping Zenit to the league title and UEFA Cup.
And Arshavin added to his reputation when he starred in Russia's thrilling 3-1 Euro 2008 quarter-final victory over Holland - scoring once and setting up another in a brilliant display.
The 27-year-old is being tracked by clubs from Italy, Spain, France, Germany and England - with the likes of the Magpies, City, Toffees and more recently Arsenal said to be interest. It is also thought that Roman Abramovich's Chelsea could enter the hunt for his signature.
And now Zenit boss Advocaat has confirmed that Arshavin want to move to one of Europe's biggest leagues.
"Andrei has told us that he wishes to change clubs," said Advocaat. "At present in the way of offers it is quiet.
"The situation may well change after the game against Holland for the national side."

So now it's £20m hey.......looks like were going to be priced out of a move for him. Not sure if davey will use a huge chunk of the summer cash on one player.

Makes me mad that the likes of City an newcastle will find this money no problams. We should have tied this deal up a long time ago.

I BLAME STEVE McCLAREN.....

Right here it go's..........

I blame steve McClaren for us Probably not gettin Arshavin. If England had won or came second in the Euro group. We would have gone the Euro's an not russia. Then Arshavin would not have been in the spot light, an moyes would have napped him up for around 8-10m.

As it is now, every man an his dog are after the lad. An his price is now some were round the £20m mark. :@

So once again......McClaren i hate you, your the worst england coach ever. An just an alround Numpty. Hope you eat a space cake in holland an trip you tits off, an get the shits...:rant:

Russia coach Guus Hiddink has showered praise on attacking midfielder Andrei Arshavin for playing a key role in their 3-1 victory over Netherlands in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Zenit St Petersburg star, who is linked with Premiership’s Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Everton, gave a man of the match performance as he set up Russia’s second goal and killed the game by scoring the third and this after coming into the tournament for their last group game having missed the first two games through suspension.
“He wasn’t even really match fit but he has tremendous skill,” said Hiddink after the famous extra-time victory.
“He knows how to dribble at defenders so that they can run with him but can’t attack him. Nature gave him that gift.”
“He has a name as a difficult human being but not to me,” continued the Dutchman. “It’s just nice to work with this guy as he’s a natural winner.”

I'd break the bank for this lad!!

As it came out of my mouth! Get a grip guys! Arshavin is very skillful lad, but he´s going to be way out of our league (or money!)

I´d rather go for a holding midfield player. If Engelaar goes to Germany, who then? The truth is that we´ve already got players up front but none to fill in Cars.

He's also going to make about 100k/week as well. What a performance last night. The guy never once got tired as well.

mcclarens only redemption would be to put the rs out of cl.

I just don't understand this "should've tied up a deal in January" stuff. It's nonsense.

Zenit would never have sold him in January. Never.

The player would never have agreed to join one club above all other possible suitors in January. Never.

You also have to remember that everyone will have known about him in January, not just clever David Moyes. Just because Arshavin graced the Goodison turf one night in the UEFA Cup doesn't mean we had any greater insight into the player than anyone else who chose to come and watch, or saw it on TV, or anything.

Nobody tried to buy him in January. Or if they did, they were rebuffed and the story never got out. We weren't the only ones thinking - "ooo good player let's keep tabs on him".

The strategy in the Arshavin camp was (IMHO) always to wait until the Russian league stopped, the national side were out of the European Championship, and a variety of offers come flying in - which they will.

The very best we can - or ever could - hope for is that Arshavin considers any offer we make at the end of the European Championship with the same interest as he did in January, when he said he might fancy Everton.

One thing is (probably) for sure though... because the Russian domestic league resumes on the 1st July, Arshavin will be at his new club within a fortnight. Exciting, if nothing else.

He was incredible last night, and I'm gutted that we'll miss out on him. And Sharpy, you're right about McClaren being to blame. It's his fault that Russia are even in the competition.

hasn't he got a 10 million buy out :s

Yea he has a 10M UK buyout however teams like Arsenal are now interested. I guess we could afford his wages but we'll have sell a player or 2 to get him. Arsenal are now interested and given that he's Russian its only a matter of time before Roman throws his 2 cents, uh I mean 2 trillion cents in. Moyes is going to have to do some serious convincing to get him to come here.

I don't blame McClaren though. Its the players who are [Poor language removed]. It doesn't matter who the manager is.

No it was the manager who picked inexperienced players, strange tactics, and unfamiliar formations.
