Are we battling for 4th?

I think with the additions each has made, the top three will consist of Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool this season, which leaves the valuable 4th place up for grabs.

Arsenal have lost Henry and with Ljumberg gone as well may lack experience this season. Spurs have invested heavily in the team and could even be ahead of Arsenal in the odds for the 4th spot.

Are we in with that mini group? Who else would you say are our rivals for that spot?

Dont want to sound pessimisstic but we need a fair bit of luck to be in the top 6 let alone the top four. We need to have very few injuries and for fringe players to find some form. I think fourth is acheivable but we need all our players to have the season of their lives and for the team to completely gel with the new additions.

Ditto that.

Keeping the training table free from bodies will be of the utmost importance. Fatigue will set in with the extra games I just hope like it was mentioned in an earlier thread that some of the youngsters can step up and make a difference.

Normally without European football and with a paper thin squad we would definetely be in with a shout of fourth thru sixth. What horrified me was even the Salt Lake City announcers made fun of our 16 man squad we brought to play and most everybody can see we lack depth at this time. So realistically I'm hopeful of a good European run but that will cost us in the prem I fear. Top ten would be marvellous if we can compete on all these fronts.

On a good day our first 11 can beat the top four teams. We showed that last season by playing very well against them on our home turf. But I can't see us having a good chance of reaching 4:th this season unless we can stay free of injuries alltogether.. and we've already gotten one longterm injury on an important player.

I think the 4:th spot will be battled out between Spurs, Arsenal & Newcastle. Can't help but think they'll finish high and they don't have any europeancup to "distract" them and fatigue their players. If we get in 2-3 more players that can take a position in our first 11 when all players are fit and at 100% then we might have an outside shot to reach 4:th.

But I'll be happy with good cupruns and a 7:th place this season so we reach Europe again. That will show others that we are up here to stay and can compete in many different competitions.. and do it well. If we go out in the cups early I definately see a miss of an europeanqualification slot as a failure.

Arsenal have the Champions League and Spurs have the UEFA cup also. Newcastle have already lost Barton for 2 to 3 months due to injury(they will start weakened) so 4th is open for anyone to be honest. Especially us.

No, 5th to 7th is about right.

European football on a more consistent basis.

Spurs should cataplut ahead of the Arse. Barcodes just with Big Sam at helm besides any ridiculus spending should be a tougher propersition this year. Always a surprise out there rears their head such as Reading last year. Well I go on record hopefull about 4-5 or 6 but realistically 7 thru 10. I might want a mulligan if we get three warm bodies in that have immediate talent.

Yes, by definition Everton is going to be one those teams that is perenial top half teams that is trying to crack the top 4 and every so often will. We were pretty close last year if you consider how mony points we left on the field agains the likes of Man City and others (about a dozen by my count). This year the team should have a better Defense and produce more scores (still their biggest weakness IMO) which should put us in the hunt.

We are a hardened bunch of fans but I believe we are very realistic in our approach to what we can achieve. We all want to be champions but to be fair we have a limited supply of resources at our disposal. So even being more fully extended from last year I for one hold to the premise of 4th would be great but more likely 7th. Which in the whole scheme of things is still excellent.

in answer to the question.. no we are not.

the uefa will take it's toll this year with saturday and wednesday games.

If we can get some decent performances from BT/Vic/Faddy until Vaughan is fit again (or even Smith if we get him), and if as others have stated we suffer minimal injuries: 4th is possible but not likely, but top 6 for sure.

It's nice to see so many of you with the belief that we'll have a long run in Europe rather than one round like last time :D

Under Moyes our league form has been much (much) better than our cup form. I'm not expecting wonders from Europe this year.
