Are Ginger haired people treated unfairly ?

Do people with ginger hair get mercilessly picked on simply for their hair colour ? Why do we do this (if we do) ?
I have a Niece who has bright ginger hair, and I can tell you all now that she doesn’t smell like sugar puffs when she’s in the rain… it’s a myth. So, do ginger haired people get victimised simply due to hair colour ?
