Are Cahill's days as a starter numbered?

Moyes pretty blunt here...

Moyes said: "I see Jack, in a way, pushing Tim Cahill at the moment.

"I think Jack is looking as if he is better, at this present time in his career, at getting forward.

"He can score with his feet, he can score with his head.

"He is one that will maybe put a bit of pressure on Tim Cahill in coming from deeper in midfield and scoring."

"better" is misleading here. In context of a conversation comparing cahill and rodwell, it makes you think he is saying "Rodwell is looking better at getting forward [than cahill]."

I don't think that is what he was intending though. I think his comment was more directed to the fact that everyone believed Rodwell was a defender (people were saying he would be the next Rio, etc). I think this comment was more to imply that Rodwell (at this point in his career) is better at getting forward [than being a natural defender] - so the most likely spot for him to show in the lineup is in Cahill's role.

So this is more a confidence builder of Rodwell (and implying a maturation/progression in his game) than it was a direct comparison with he and Cahill. I love our selection issues, and love that we'll be able to let Cahill run his little heart out, and in the 65th minute, bring on Rodders and just watch the opponents hearts sink... (or vice versa depening on who starts). I love the idea of using him in this way.

COYB!!!

Hmmmm....maybe Chris. But he mentioned Cahill by name. He essentially framed this as an either/or situation with Rodwell and Cahill, which I think we all knew.

I really don'y get why Cahill is being written off by so many people. Cahill IS Everton personified. Of course he doesn't have the passing range of Arteta or the on ball skills on Peanuts but he NEVER stops believing harrying, tackling and generally making the side tick over. Opposition teams are terrified of him for his aerial ability and late running. The guy is supremely fit so to start thinking he can't last a game now he is over 30 is absurd. It is brilliant that we now have competition for each place (except LB) and I truly hope we see more and more of Rodwell this season but Cahill's name will still be an automatic one in the starting 11 for at least the next 2 seasons and rightly so.

Absolutely ridiculous! Is there no tactic in Moyes' mind where both are on the pitch at the same time having huge matches?? I hope Moyes is just playing some sort of mind games to push Cahill to be even better than he already is.

THIS!
Cahill is a presence in the team, he does the dirty work that allows others to get into space. He is the first line of defense the opposition means, which must be scary. He is also the most likely to pop up with a goal when we need it.

It depends on his performances.

He deserves his place in the team at the moment, as he scored and performed well against Wolves.

Most overrated Everton player in recent history. His goals (which dried up a bit last season) have been his one saving grace. Fact is, he's about as useful as a chocolate fireguard in midfield...and we all know it. Both he and Neville would be coming off the bench in a world ruled by logic. And I cant fathom why Moyes practically broke the bank (such as it is at EFC) hammering out a long, costly contract extension for a 30 year old player with such obvious limitations.

Because - along with Arteta, Neville and Moyes himself - he is the heartbeat of the club. Like Keegan, he makes himself better than he really is by sheer force of will. He has that Australian sporting mentality that refuses to contemplate defeat and respects no reputation and the rest of the team feeds off that. If he is so bad, why do other players and managers fear him so much?

I actually think this is what made him stand out in the first place. Raw, unadulterated desire to win at all costs. I love the man and although i see Rodwell as the future, it's Tim's shirt to lose.

People need to stop thinking that Cahill must start. I'd love to see Rodwell play but I think that the starting lin e-up should be selected on their last performance, not due to their reputation.
