People can set up so called charities, they collect or have a charity shop that donates to a registered charity, yet only have to give a very small percentage to that actual charity. All these charity shops pay no business rates etc, usually get a better deal on the rent and then can hand over a couple of hundred quid at the end of the year to their nominated charity. They obviously all don't do that, but some of these that collect make a living out of it whilst giving hardly anything.

I know a guy who works for a charity and he earns £15 an hour for doing next to nothing.

18 months inside for a not especially inventive or deceitful, totally non-violent theft of five grand is a very severe sentence in these enlightened times, he must have royally pissed off that judge.
