We, the fans, tend to big up not so good players after three or four good performances. We' ve done it numerous times but the bigger problem is the manager doing it. How many times did Lampard use the word ' fantastic ' for players like :
Iwobi - who has had about five good games in like 4 years;
Coady - who is an average defender;
Coleman - every man and his dog know that he has been awful for at least three seasons;
Calvert -Lewin - who is an average PL striker at best.
He did that with Gordon too , instead of keeping him firmly grounded and making him work really hard.

I see similarities with Barkley in their decision making. It’s what separates good players into very good ones. Both are lacking in this department.
I get the similarities, but I agree with the OP that Barkley, while not without his flaws, was a far more rounded and capable player.
Agree, but with Gordon, if he was smart. He'd be a decent to average player.
If Barkley was smart, he'd have played in multiple title winning sides, imo.
He is talented. But indoor soccer should be his game. Football on a big pitch is to complicated for him.
A player brought up in the culture of getting managers sacked by half arsing it. Any player who grows up an Evertonian and puts in a disinterested performance like that is doing it intentionally.

Club seemed to have this bizarre idea that the fans loved him and there would be uproar if he was sold. The truth is most fans would have willingly shown him the door when decent offers came in.

Well out of order this sort of behaviour no matter how poor he has been
Was always a huge Barkley fan. Thought he was a fantastic footballer, with a very obvious but fatal flaw (brain)
Think with his injury's and stuff it would have been a bit underwhelming for him to come back
