Another interesting Everton article from FT

Technically he's correct. He's from Liverpool, therefore he's a Liverpudlian. Bear in mind that it's a London-centric paper. It would be easier if the national collective was to refer to supporters of the darkside as RS, rather than daub all of us who hail from the city as Liverpudlians.

Seriously, as someone who has spent 20+ years living and working away from the city, and half that time abroad, I'm often referred to as a Liverpudlian. Only happens the first time! I was amazed when the Chairman of a large company in Asia called me a Scouser though!

I never have or would class myself as a Liverpudlian, in fairness its a phrase you don't hear much anymore but If its ever said I'm quick to point out I'm an Evertonian not a Liverpudlian.

Scouser, Scally etc dont offend me at all ( unless 'theiving' is put in front!)

It you ignore the patronising tone & the blatant 'Northern monkeys' Southern media bias, then it's actually a good piece & quite insightful in terms of the level of detail that's used in modern day football preparation.

When the burly, rather fearsome-looking Scotsman Moyes took the job in 2002, Everton did look a hopeless case. They were – and are – the second club of England’s poorest city.

Pretty sure we've always been the first club in this city.

Whist there were some interesting insights in there about what goes on at finch farm, I found parts of this article to be extremly disrespectful. I hate the way we are potrayed in the general media. Just because we have a financial disadvantage to the teams that we compete against, it doesn't mean that we are constantly overachieving. The people who write these type of artciles try and make out like we are performing miracles year after year, because they only take into account the money side of things. Whilst money is, of course, a huge factor in modern football, I can never understand why people fail to take into account other factors which contribute to our achievments, such as our management, our excellent fanbase, the character of our players, the spirit and heritage of the club, the team spirit, and of course (as the article mentions) our approach to tactical analysis. These are the sort of things which make sport what it is. In these factors we have an advantage over other teams which somewhat cancels out our financial disadvatages. So we are not really overachieving at all. Financially we are, but not on any other level.

This "plucky little Everton" thing does my head in, the article attempts to compliment us, but it's just partronising.

I lost interest at the first mention of Mcmanaman, utter git.
I seen Mr McManaman on Question of Sport many years ago and he was asked why he signed for
the shxxte as he was an Evertonian. He said their set up was better. From that point onwards he ceased
to be an everonian and the tears he was shedding in the article were crocadile.

I dont mind been called a Liverpudlian, it's got nothing to do with football. Where as Evertonian can only be used in football context. In fact I'm quite proud that I can't think of another team in England whose fans have a name. Unless someone else can?

See what you mean. Gooners, Mackhams etc dont relate to the club name, and Geordie, Brummie etc could relate to someone from that area, but not remotely interested in footie. Suppose its cos, unlike most 2 team cities, both clubs have totally different names, London aside.

I am an Evertonian by birth, which is identifiable as a supporter of Everton, but a Bristolian by upbringing, (40 years & counting), but that doesnt show any affinity with neither City or Rovers.

Interesting point mate. Must be one though.

Yeh, plus gooners and mackems are also club nicknames were as evertonians is nothing to do with the club really. Just the fanbase. I suppose toffees would be are equivalent to gooners and mackems.

There must be another but I can't think of one. Similarly Goodison is the only ground that gets called by that, all the rest are, upton park, villa park, Stamford bridge etc. even motd will say 'next to Goodison'. Think it's cos we have been on the scene in top flight football for so long it explains itself. Testament to the clubs history really.
