Yes, the guys who can't get a game in our team would go far in that competition.

Every nation will produce one decent player. It's the nations that produce lots over a long period of time that become powerhouses. The competition between those players is what makes leagues good and what attracts players from outside them. Good players. Not Robbie Fowler. Has the A-League produced a world class player? Are any of the nations in the AFC routinely sending players to the Champions League?

I'm sure football matters a great deal in Australia. It's just that success in a poor league is not a barometer of success in one of the top leagues in the world. Which is why Dean Thomas the coach of the GB Aussie Rules team won't be getting any calls for an AFL job any time soon.
