I would argue he does. I think he needs to do more, he’s got more in his locker than he’s showing. He was our only player playing little slide balls in to the forwards feet today. Didn’t hide and in particular second half tried to drive us on. Personally wouldn’t jettison him just yet

What exactly does he do? What does he have in his locker? I can’t think of anything he excels at. His passing is average at the absolute best of times, that’s because all he ever does is give it to whoever is closest to him.

Watch the game again, maybe meditate first to lose the hate you’ll see some nice dinked balls up the line to Digne, some clever little balls to Richy and Doms feet, a very good chance created for Dom off a set piece and a decent-ish shot on target. Some nice switches of play too. Some dodgy moments too and has a tendency to get caught on his heels on second balls when obviously he should be up on his toes. As i said far from perfect but i wouldn’t jettison just yet

Like Sigurdsson he is suited to a 4-2-3-1 unfortunately for him we have moved away from this system. He tried yesterday but what we needed from him he wasn't able to deliver. We needed a player who could drive forward with the ball and that just isn't his game. He his a player who assists the assisted ie slide balls down the side for crosses into the box. He reminds me of Gravesen because when the team are bad he isn't quite often the worst player. However when the team plays well he looks up to the standard.

Gravesen had drive in him and fight, also could tackle and score, Gomes offers us nothing, apart from giving fouls away on the edge of the box

He frustrated me as much as he frustrated you but he like Holgate is playing a position/role that doesn't suit him. I think if we continue with the 4-3-3 we need to accept there is a few players in the squad it will not suit. Gomes is one of them.

He really isn’t suited to a 4231 he’s completely incapable of playing in a 2 man midfield as we have seen many times before. Prior to his injury last season that’s where he played and he was just as shockingly bad. The performance away at Villa was the worst I’ve seen from a central midfielder at Everton in a long time. Then Saints at home last season close second to that.

He gets thrown into a 433 now because that’s the only way we can squeeze him in, completely relinquish him of most responsibilities, Allan does all the sweeping up, Doucoure does all the running back and forth, all he literally has to do is stand around making simple passes and he isn’t even very good at that.

He’s not good enough. Lacks the speed, energy, drive, desire and versatility to be a PL level footballer.

Sell ASAP.
