2020/21 Andre Gomes

Really don’t see the issue with Gomes. He was fairly quiet but so so was the rest of our midfield. Think Allan had a slightly worse match in comparison to Gomes. People are expecting Gomes to be the creator but his job seems more to be moving the ball quickly. I think a lot of his work goes under the radar and most weeks he won’t be noticed as his job will free up and show off those around him.
 

The fact remains none of the players currently in the squad can do his role better

Then we move to the transfer window, but a CM is not one of the priorities. A goal keeper and an attacking player are ahead.

So Gomes is gonna have to do for now.

My choice would be Sigurdsson since Iwobi probably has the spot on the left locked up while Richarlison is out. Bernard in the middle against PL midfields scares me too much to try it. If Iwobi does well on the left maybe think about moving him central.

The one thing that is wild about this situation is those three options might all be defensive liabilities and I still think they'd be a step up from what Gomes offers. So if they can give us more going forward it is worth doing.

We’ve seen all of the other 3 play some brilliant through balls from central positions, and as you rightly say, they can’t be much worse defensively than Gomes. It’s definitely time to give one of them a try.

I’d play Gordon instead of Iwobi out wide but Iwobi is almost certainly nailed on.

And a RB. CM replacements will start in 2022. Gblamin should be coming back soonish too

Donkeree and Allan were also terrible, both threads have loads of people saying how boss they are, but people just cant wait to throw the boot in on Andre.

Disgusts me.

These same people will be crying when Richarlison bins us off, demanding loyalty, then wonder why.

This is one I genuinely don't understand. I think he's had one poor game all season. Doucoure's had a few very average halves and is getting a free pass (rightly)

he is inconsistent and I think can do better

we probably could sign better than him, but I don’t know how much for

he has been quietly and efficiently doing the job asked of him apart from the derby

he came back in after injury, despite calls for others to start, because Carlo sees him as the man for that role

none of Delph siggurdson Davies or Bernard have shown anything to suggest they might do that job to Carlos satisfaction

Tactically I really like how we are set up and I think his role his key to it

He probably needs more obvious “moments” in games to get more people onside as it doesn’t seem like his good performances in his first 3 games were enough to forgive him one poor one

it’s a completely new midfield set up and shouldn’t be expected to work perfectly in every game, in fact that it’s gone so well so far is a bit of a rarity IMO

I think the above is all true
 

I wonder what Delph and Sigurdsson have done in the last couple of years that make them such an obvious replacement. Yep he was poor enough in the derby, he didnt stink it out but he was poor like a few other of our players.

The thing is, pre injury he’s had about 5 really good games in 40. And was still getting a lot of praise of the fans.

And yes he started the season well, but I feel with James, Ancelotti needs a disciplined player to cover for him down the right. And plays Doucoure there, which effects his game. Maybe he doesn’t trust Gomes to play in the right, but Ancelotti obviously rates him higher than the other options as he keeps picking him.

Long term I see Allan playing right, as its a position He played a lot for Napoli. With Gbamin or new defensive midfielder coming in and Doucoure going In to Gomes’s Place on the left.

Doucoure made more runs into the penalty box than any other midfielder last season. And we aren’t seeing much of it.

true but the whole team was crap during the period of those 40 games, or for a lot of it.

like really crap

apart from siggurdson I’m happy to judge them all on what they are doing this season...even Pickford as much as I can’t stand him, and I think Gomes has done well

not a bad suggestion on Doucoure doing his role
 
The way I look at it is Carlo has forgotten more than I ever learnt about football. If he keeps playing him then he is the best person at the club for that role...until he is replaced.

All (well most) of our players deserve our support and backing. There once was a time we needed to make a point known to force a change, now it is all in hand.
