They are different type of players mate.

Gomes has been poor at times, but I think his laid back style winds people up.

Hes never going to be Allan, but he has a different skill set.

People expecting some players to be things they aint.
I think for me it just get down to not putting in the effort compared to the rabid dogs around him, he's not that special to get away with it...they got James there for that

What I do like about Gomes is that he’s not a crab.

For all his faults (that he runs like he’s in superglue mainly), he generally tries to play forward. Even if it’s a poor ball or he goes round someone and doesn’t have the pace to kick on, he’s positive on the ball.

He was absolutely finished at Anfield and became a liability and a waste of a shirt. The fitness needs to improve. But he doesn’t hide on the pitch like Schneiderlin and others have done in the past.

Is he good enough as a starter to get where we want to be? Probably not. Can he do a job in certain games or come off the bench to calm things down/get us on the ball more? I think so. Especially with legs around him.

Think he’d be top class in Serie A or France where the pace isn’t quite the same.

Same old story. A player, getting up there, age wise, has a terrible injury, and is never the same again. They’re not terrible, they’re simply not as good as they were before the knock.

We need a squad.

We have Gomes, Iceland, Davies, Gmblammo, who, for whatever reasons, are possibly not really at the right level we need on a consistent basis.

Then we have Allan and Doucs.

So for me we certainly need another body and in order to do that, at least 2 of them have got to go.

I would say :

Allan, Doucs, newbie as first choice
Gomes, Davies, Gmblammo as back up

Punt Iceland and Delph.

Yeah, I know, you and Zat would sell them all and buy 2 new players, but I doubt that happens.

Siggurdsson gets a lot of grief but for me he's twice the player Gomes is and I imagine Carlo would punt Gomes first (neither are good enough to push us on imo).

Wouldnt be shocked if Siggurdsson signed a 12 month extension with as you say 2 out - for me Delph + Gomes moved on with Gbamin given a season to see if he has anything left in the tank after those injuries.

Both players get a lot of stick, but both can and have played well at times, sadly for us we need better than at times.

I just think if we need to add, which I think we can agree we do, moving on the older Iceland would be more prudent, but I suppose it depends on who and how we can sell.

Id put them all apart from Davies, Doucoure and Allan and sign 2 more CMs (as Goat said I would)...

if it was a choice of Gomes or Sigurdsson id sell Gomes as he has a few years on his conrtract to soak up wages for.

Sell him this summer and Sigurdsson on a free next summer.

Hes the same player....1 good game every half a dozen.

Brands wants 7 midfielders next season. I think he's good enough to be part of the 7 but he needs to be more of a squad man than a regular starter. I think he just lacks a little pace sometimes but he can pick a pass and never stops trying even when tiring.

I am getting to that point now where I hate seeing him play. For as much of a nice guy he is, and dead handsome and that, I just want him nowhere near the XI.

Forget the talk of "since his injury..." - He was crap for the most part before it.

Forget the talk about effort, or any perceived lack thereof, he just simply is not good enough. Not a good enough passer or tackler; can't even point as well as Gylfi.

I know Gylfi isn't a popular figure on here either, but he offers a million times more in terms of actual productivity than Gomes does, even if they're similarly anonymous for large chunks of games.

I'm sure he could do well for a Europa League level Spanish or Portuguese team, so hopefully we can put him in the shop window in the summer and get a nibble or two.

Can he go now please
