Pleasing debut, will only get better when he attains full match fitness and is fully accustomed to the pace of the game over here. Silva spoke in his interview how happy he is around the club and how he is enjoying himself in training. Early days, but let’s hope he enjoys himself so much, he wants to stay.

Silva is first and foremost a defensive coach, at least in his successful stints prior to his PL experience. IMO, the only recklessness I've seen from him is the higher pressure he deployed at West Ham. He tried to go after them and overwhelm them / score early and while it almost worked, it backfired and West Ham put their first chance in the back of the net after 10 minutes of pure domination by us.

Beyond that, it is absolutely not essential that we have a holding midfielder and only essential that we can link from defense to attack as a unit. He played one at Sporting because he had one. When Watford started out well under Silva, they played Doucoure and Capoue together as defensive mids, but really it was like have 2 box to box players, and a pivot in Cleverly to help support and attack with width. That team had ZERO issues transitioning from D to O. He inherented Gana and Sigurdsson, both with unique skillsets, so he's going to use them as he'd be nuts to not do so. All he needs is a box to box type that can pass and/or carry the ball to help transition. Davies can play that role, but Gomes is the far superior player. That's why he's here. Brands and Silva aren't dummies.

Having Gana as a ball winning DM, Gomes as more of a box to box CM, and Sigurdsson as an ACM is fine.

Barrios is maybe a slight upgrade over Morgan Schneiderlin. Boring, slow #6, with decent passing range, limited athleticism, etc. I'm not sure he's any better than Morgan and well, Silva isn't playing Morgan for a reason. It's because Silva doesn't need to have a true #6. He also doesn't need to have a playmaker that holds the ball. And it's FINE.
Crim,
Just a few egs
- went 2-1 up against Wolves with 10 men, didn't go defensive and consolidate, he allowed Wolves to make two substitutions and get their goal, before replacing Tosun with Niasse.
- Went two goals up against Bournemouth, both sides down to 10 men but made no substitutions until after they drew level.
- in neither of the first two games did he change the tactics or make substitutions to strengthen the defence of the side.
- in the first six games, the defence in the midfield was a shambles, with the full backs, especially Kenny getting exposed time and again, esp when persisting with Walcott playing the high press. The amount of space behind the high press was reckless at times. Its amazing more goals weren't conceded.
- In the last match he didn't bother to have a proper back up for Coleman.

Yes these are the negatives (some of); and a good case can be made for no pain, no progress
but don't fool yourself with this 'first and foremost' he's a defensive coach malarkey.

And Silva's tactics in the West Ham match were a joke, no use defending it....pun intended

All this sounds fine if it wasn't for that other part of the game - you know the one...where the other side gets the ball.

Silva has managed to rack up some startling stats for being one of the top three sides in retrieving the ball from open play within 3 passes.
But against better sides, how may goals are we going to concede attempting to sustain this. Lacazette's goal may be a classic example of what may be coming down the road.

There are promising signs all the same. This issue of space in behind the press seems to be being addressed. But will it come together in time for the challenges ahead, or will it come together at all.
I don't see your Gana (ball winner), Gomes (box to box), Sig (AM) being the answer; and its certainly not going to see us in the CL in the next few seasons.
Once again we'd have Gana trying to do all the tackling, ball winning.
You have to have a lot more possession resulting in a different balance for these three to work - which I don't think they'll be able to do, Gana and Sig especially.
Its just too easy for good coaches and top players/teams to exploit it. Its mid table at best.

First of all, to say he didn't change tactics in those games is not accurate, but regardless, I'm going to take a lot more stock in a multi-year career than a couple games with a new club.

Second of all, Man City and Liverpool as the two most obsessed teams in the league at retrieving the ball quickly once they've lost it, and it seems like it's working pretty well for them. So it's certainly sustainable.

Firstly, what tactical changes did he make in the first 6 games which could be viewed as strengthening the defence/addressing the obvious weaknesses. Can only think of one - a substitution - late in the game, Digne on for a tiring Richarlison, but don't know if that counts.

Secondly, the RS and City have two of the best coaches and teams in the world. Two coaches who you wouldn't say fall into the 'first and foremost' defensive category. Two coaches who for years have been at the honing and perfecting their approach to the game at the very top; attracting the best players. Yes they've managed to make it sustainable for them.

But let me get this right, your saying Silva, as a first and foremost defensive coach, now trying to bring in an attacking style of play, with no proven success at either - that his approach is 'certainly' sustainable because the RS and City are doing it.
What is for certain is that your Gana (ball winner), Gomes (box to box), Sig (AM) combination (with Walcott thrown in for good measure) are not going to do what Pep and Plopps players are doing week in week out.

Silva is ambitious, has potential, has the players believing in what the club is doing, has the players going for it - what's not to like. Just don't need to go all girly groupie on Silva. He and Brands are making the the changes, we just need to get behind the players on the pitch and enjoy the ride.

A position which gas been lacking quality since arteta left. Didvery well for his premiership start. Can be physical as well which is good. Match time again against the mancs even if we get 60 mins out of him on big pitch

Very classy debit, can see why Barca signed him. They'll probably want him if he keeps playing like that though.

I hope he does very well here and really enjoys it and we push for a deal in the summer. We badly need this position filled with a bit of quality. He has that in plenty in his locker.

I’d be made up if we can arrange a permanent transfer. Him and Gueye as a partnership is a massive improvement on anything else we can put there.

Switched the play with ease and picked the right pass the majority of the time.

Not just him but Zouma as well, get them both signed up.

Nice interview with him. He's obviously a man who is happy with supporters not booing his every touch.
Like with every player, confidence plays such an important role in a player being able to perform. The lad was obviously bereft of confidence during his spell at Barcelona. It’s a fresh start for him here, let’s hope he continues in the same vain in the forthcoming matches. As we have some really difficult away games coming up and his ability to retain possession and pick a pass will be essential.
