i have a chess set somewhere that i made when i was an apprentice, had to write the programs for the machines and then make it, it got inspected by m.o.d. inspectors to about 1/1000th of a millimeter. needless to say a lot of time was put into it and it would've cost the taxpayer a fortune.
we used to make replica gun carriages and stuff for m.o.d. chiefs, generals and the like that would come to visit, they would get gold plated, so had to be polished until there wasn't a single mark on them before gold plating, it would take about 60 apprentices a month to make one and polish it, that alone would've cost a mint cos we were on about 200 notes a week.
