He's a really odd player. I think 3 or 4 times he's come on as a sub this season and been pretty decent, but when he started he was absolutely woeful. At the very start of last year I thought he actually looked pretty good, which surprised me because I thought it was a terrible signing, but then as the season went on he just got worse. He just doesn't seem to have any level of consistency, even within the same game.

I just don't think you can rate Bernard's contributions without the ball and slate Iwobi as a luxury player (which is a ridiculously dumb term but that's another conversation). They're at best similar although I really think Iwobi is a pretty reasonable defender for a winger when we aren't holding him to Richarlison's standard and Bernard's lack of any type of physical traits and poor tackling make him a bit of an issue. But as I said at best they're pretty similar.

I'll try to decode bits of this.

What term would you use, for a player who offers a lot offensively, but very little defensively?

I'm not tryng to slate Iwobi either, I am reasonably balanced on him. The numbers at certain things are very promising and the onlygame I've seen him as a "10" was against West Ham and he played very well. The numbers seem to suggest he should play centrally. But he doesn't, and I'm not sure I can work out why. Either way, I'm not sure I can really be accused of slating Iwobi, I like to think of myself as faairly balanced on the question.

I also don't fundamentally think they are similar defensively. I actually think Bernard gets back into good positions without the ball, and is actually quite good at pressing. He's not a big tackler, but he gets into position well. I would personally trust him to play down the left and filter back in, where Iwobi I don't see that.

Part of the issue for Iwobi, and a lot of fans, is maybe they expect to see him doing a lot more defensively, given his size, and he doesn't?

Part of the issue as I've explained before and gotten laughed at is they have numbers for who presses better and Bernard is not and has not been better than Iwobi at it. I respect that people like to use their eyes but when difference exist you have to at least try to reconcile that. And while I can agree that Bernard might position himself better that doesn't really matter when any half decent attacking player can dribble past you with ease. That's sort of the same issue that Sigurdsson has.

The luxury player thing is simply that having good attacking players isn't a luxury. You can't win games and especially can't win trophies without players who get the ball into the net so saying that it is a luxury to start those players to me is just wrong as it is actually a necessity.

If we're chasing a game, he's so erratic he can be a good option. He does try to make things happen.

He's just not an option to start wide in league games, though. Has to be central if he's going to start and like you say, he's just not consistent enough to build a system around.

Is it worth trying him on the right?
I don’t want him on the right, he’s best in the middle but wide right is the only available spot on the front 6 for me as I think James should be at 10 with the team built around him.

5 players pick themselves but for that last place..... Iwobi > Sigurdsson & Gomes.

Agree but I see no other option unless Gordon is getting and a go and currently Carlo doesn't seem to trust him.

Will be interesting to see if he plays centrally. If he does, it will either be the final nail in the coffin or it shows he has been played out of position since he began and deserves a second chance.
