2019/20 Alex Iwobi

When 39000 fans turn up every week putting their hard earned cash into the club and one of the players who in fans eyes hasn't earned his corn starts being a flashy sod, then he deserves pelters. fans help pay the wages, they expect hard work as a minimum.

When was that? I only really remember him from around 2001 onwards, and he just seemed to have nothing about him.

Yeah i wouldnt have gone that far. He wasnt spectacular in any way shape or form but he was tidy enough and ran his socks off.
And as crazy as it sounds. Would he get a game today given our current midfield. He probably would.
How sad is that.

You're using billion and million interchangeably and they aren't that. Until you can put a better grasp on how different 2.4 billion and 2.4 million or even 24 million (which is probably a high end ballpark figure for what Iwobi has) we can't really have this conversation.

No one is a billionaire without scummy behavior along the line btw. With Moshiri it is partnering up with a Russian oligarch. It isn't really an ethical thing, even if he did well in his life to be given that opportunity.

The fact that youre now categorising £2.4mil / £24mil and £2.4billion really misses the point. These are just numbers and really have no relevance the the underlying point...especially as those sums are all hugely disproportionate to what the average fan makes in a year or a lifetime.

A typical fan may never in their lifetime earn what Iwobi earns in one year...or even 6months. It doesnt matter if its £2mil / £20mil or £200mil a year to your average fan.

Its all about perception. If your colleague or ex schoolmate just sauntered around rarely working but they were a genius and ended up making a huge amount of money compared to you, would you not praise that?

Likewise a 'lazy' footballer who would trot around the pitch yet come up with flashes of ability could make a fortune and be idolised because of their talent. If they then choose to squander any money they are still adored because of their ability. Spemd it how they want, they 'deserve' it.

Another type is someone like a Flamini who was a good defensive midfielder, put the effort in and had a successful career. He now says he isnt a billionaire but his company is worth billions. No one is going to begrude him that, certainly not football fans. He 'earned it'. As has Pique whose now got fingers in all sorts of pies.

We then have the 'Iwobi' category. This is the category where the fans see a player signed for the 4th highest fee in the clubs history (transfermarkt) and expectations are high.

We then have expectations and perceptions.

Do the fans perceive Iwobi to be a 'genius'?
Do the fans perceive Iwobi to be a 'hard working' player?
Do the fans appreciate some or any of Iwobi's skillset when on the pitch relative to their expectations?
Does he 'deserve' or has he 'earned' this holiday based on his season?

If the answer to any of these is "Yes" then fair enough we can disagree.

I believe that the answer to all three is currently, "No".

So, you now have a player who is considered a failure and a flop by the fanbase compared to expectations. Additionally fans then think back about the pulling out of tackles and lack of desire on the pitch and put the fee down to:

A: A total waste of money = Blame management
B: Iwobi not showing heart or desire and getting his boot in = Blame Iwobi.

Its just the same with Moise Kean and Gylfi Sigurdsson from a large portion of the fanbase.

Moise Kean has looked 'flashy', lazy on pitch and broke lockdown so there has been a backlash from the fans. However they saw Kean to be a young player and show signs of something there. Hes now showing desire as hes been training hard.

He gets another chance.

Sigurdsson ia despised for Iwobi levels of desire on the pitch yet he also doesnt post social media videos and photos of vast opulence which fans cant afford. Imagine if he did.

This is why these players have agents and social media agencies. Also common sense.

If you have a bad year at work you then show your boss, colleagues and even customers you will improve and put in extra hours or extra effort. They see that and organically you should improve your performance.

If you instead splash your cash on a trip and 'rub it in your bosses, colleagues and customers faces' on social media i think thats going to be counter productive.

Ask Alex Ferguson.

Ask the fans if they believe Iwobi 'earned' or 'deserved' this reward.

Im not even mad.

Good luck to the fella.

Living his best life, ain't ever gonna come at a man for that.

Agreed.

Its going to be interesting to see if he comes back refreshed and focused for preseason under Ancelotti rather than the last minute club move, change of managers, formations and bad timed injuries.

Lets hope we see a different player this coming season.

Imagine wasting your time trying to defend Alex Iwobi lol
Imagine wasting this much time berating him on the internet, social media post or not.

As poor as he was at times last season, Iwobi isn't our biggest problem. This is clearly is primarily down to his Instagram account rubbing people the wrong way, otherwise it wouldn't still constantly be referenced.

Yes, he definitely needs to improve on the pitch, but he's a still a young man living his life how he wants. Can't see what the point in utterly ripping him to pieces is whilst he's still an Everton player personally.. he hasn't slagged off the club or hurt anyone.

Harsh on walcott has offered more than all of them players, thought iwobi was carrying to much bulk needs to cut it down to use his pace more. Cant see him leaving but he must improve
Walcott is the most timid player I have ever seen, if he had a little bit of agression and heart he would of been a world beater

I mean you couldnt be more wrong if you tried.
He is a massive problem. One of the main problems. Because when you throw weak players into your midfield who give the minimum that they can and offer nothing. Him and sigurdsson, then you have a massive problem. He wasnt getting taken off every game because he wasnt a problem.
And this thread was very strong before any instagram nonsense. Dont let that hide he is a massive problem for this club when he's on the pitch.

There is a difference in booing at the match or criticising his performances than just abusing him on the internet.

Im not saying the same happened to him, but remember Xhaka? The Arsenal fans turned on him and wished his kids die of cancer and all kinds.

People who do that on Twitter and Instagram behind a keyboard have serious issues.

To be fair tho I'd also say theres a difference in telling a player you think hes gash on social media and saying you wish his kids die of cancer.

Not condoning either but one is obviously less serious than the other and footballers should be able to deal with supporters questioning their ability.

That's a lot of writing when you could have just said "I don't know what a lot of money actually is in the current state of the world."
