Alcohol.......

I'm a complete tosser drunk.

I save it for a laugh with the lads now, don't dare let Mrs Gloves out up with that.

Must say, I've been with her all week on the All Inclusive and it has been alright just having a beer here or there and not getting hammered.

On a personal level, I have always enjoyed a social drink when out for a meal, going to the match or with friends, but over the weekend I've decided to give it up completely, not because it's a problem but it just seems a sensible thing to do.

Just thought I'd mention it is now a month since I had an alcoholic drink.

Apart from desperately wanting a cold beer during the recent hot spell it's been pretty easy. Definitely helps on controlling weight. Even though I was never a "big" drinker previously, I can see the difference already.

If you are a diabetic type 2 like myself just have the odd shandy I have about two a year use a light beer like a pale ale or lager - had two pints of shandy with diabetic lemonade in it, do I miss a drink yes, but its no good with medication!
but it taste like nectar and enjoyable when I have a drink of it!

Hardest thing there is to kick if you get addicted. A drug addict has to go out of their way to get hold of drugs. Alcohol is in your face all the time. In movies, tv shows (christ, the soaps are full of people who drink too much, with no issue made of it,) advertisements and even just something as simple as entering a shop can be a challenge to an alcoholic.

I can go a week or so without a drink, but I could never give it up completely, and wouldn't want to, as I enjoy a drink. A nice red with a meal, a cold beer on a summers day, a nice single malt sat next to the fire in the winter. Give that up forever? Not a chance.

Sauv blanc in hand as I type, well on the table.
Good servant - poor master
could probably do less but I like the taste.
don't do as much as I did tbh...which is good
When I think of some of the times I could barely see past the car windscreen
If you can't be good be lucky

I have a can of beer or a glass of wine with meals but don't go out drinking very often.

I must admit that I am too easily influenced by the pressure and will drink more in the company of bigger drinkers. Very rarely get drunk though despite some of my joke posts on the Drunk Thread. I do enjoy it though.

"people with blue eyes run a higher risk of being alcoholics. A new study out of the University of Vermont suggests that the link not only exists, but it appears to be a genetic one."

Surely these Universities have better things to spend their money on?

I think you were talking about finding some non-alcoholic beer recently - spotted this the other day:

Original Helles Alkoholfrei
no alcohol and only 7 calories for half a litre. Another rival for the oldest brewery in Europe. Not sure if you can get it as an import anywhere. I might have to go on a research trip...

I find entering shops no challenge whatsoever.

It's staying sober that's a [Poor language removed].

Went 10 months without a drop of alcohol a couple of years ago, as part of my 'get healthy' changes. It was hard going out with my friends and not drinking during that time but I kept to my word.

Not only did the alcohol free lifestyle help me to get fit, it also changed me for the long term as I no longer binge drink at home. You type of drinking you do out of boredom if you will.

Prefer to drink wine these days. Just something about the taste for me....and there is also something about sharing a bottle with a lady that's adds a bit of sexyness to it. So wine it is.

Just like to add that the first time I did drink after going 10 months alcohol free, was at a good friends wedding and I started to feel it after only 3 drinks. I was plastered after 7 or so. Not fun times to be honest.

Yes , I think there is an underlying 'Addictive personality' type thing which affects some people but I also think there is a hereditary problem too... I don't mean that everybody who has a parent who has/had an alcohol problem will become alcoholics as many will never touch a drop, but I believe the potential to be far greater for people who fall into that group. From my own personal experiences growing up I know I would never allow myself to become alcohol dependent ... that's not to say I don't enjoy a good social life ... it's knowing when to stop that's the secret.

But saying all that, I could be wrong haha.... I see a lot of people who have drug or alcohol problems but they are secondary problems.... the specific group of people I work 1 to 1 with have their own unique struggles to begin with and often use substances as a form of self medicating to begin with which then leads to dependency. It's still quite a new area of understanding for me at the moment but I do find it strangely interesting and fascinating work to become involved in.

I used to be addicted to the hokey cokey but I've turned myself around and that's what its all about.
