Alcohol … how’s your relationship with it ?

I’ve always had a pretty unhealthy relationship with booze so have to keep an eye on it. I used to work shifts which stopped me drinking in the 3-4 nights a week I worked but every night off would involve booze, often quite a bit when I was younger.

I then moved into a managers job and started 9-5. Unfortunately the drinking on nights off remained meaning I drank every night, rarely to excess but 4 cans Stella fairly standard. My job was always stressful so daily drinking was standard for many years. Eventually I quit my job for stress reasons and I now have a normal stress level job and my drinking is well under control. Now I’m a 4 coronas on a Friday and Saturday kind of guy. I’m much happier this way.
I’ve taken most drugs and been around many friends and acquaintances that use other drugs. I can safely and categorically say that booze is by far the worst, socially acceptable but the damage it causes is massive.

Best way to take the strain off the NHS…………..legalise weed and mushrooms.

I have always been a social drinker, very rarely did I drink when on my own in the flat. Maybe a few rums when watching the golf, or something like that. When I did go out there was usually an excess of drinking. Around 30, it did start to effect my mental health a bit. I would get a bit irrational with depressive thoughts, when out drinking, but it was not very often at all so ignored it.

A few years back it started to get a bit more regular, so I would start to refuse to go out. I then had a very rough time in my life so went completely sober for about 18 months. Was not difficult, thought it would be, especially as I had to have the help of a friend who lived in a shared house and used to throw mental all night parties, but I was surprised at how easy it was for me not to even have a sip, even in that environment.

I then started to get mentally stronger, so started on Radler (Shandy), as they make some really nice ones here. If you ever get a chance to try Becks Ice - Lime & Mint, it is gorgeous, perfect hot day drink (after a cider).

Anyway, now I have the odd drink here and there, in the past year there have been 2 large sessions. One when I returned to Liverpool for the first time in 5 years and met up with a couple of mates who I hadn't seen in that long, and one a couple of weekends ago when I met up with the same guys in Amsterdam to see Metallica.

Changed as I got older. Now if I have a decent session I wake middle of the night with my fight or flight triggered so pissed me off. Don’t want to be one of them lizards telling the young posse that hangovers get worse as you get older but they do and they leave a mental mark for a few days. I’m a tedious fitness biff anyway so seldom drink and very rarely at home, only with company I love and who can only engage over alcohol.

i was a bad pisshead for 30 odd years,
havent had a drink now for 3 years, life and relationships have never been better.
i can see it now for what it is and i wish i could have packed in 10 years earlier
had some good time though while i was drunk, but it also caused a lot of problems both mental and physical!

Am a friend of Bills for about a few years now.
The hanxiety was too much to handle and effected everything.
And very nearly lost everything as a result.

All of the clichés are corny but there is a lot of truth in them.
One thing I know is that if you are changing your life responsibilities and goals to meet your drinking then its a problem.

some of the best times I had in my life were alcohol sessions but the best thing I ever did was give up
