I have always been a social drinker, very rarely did I drink when on my own in the flat. Maybe a few rums when watching the golf, or something like that. When I did go out there was usually an excess of drinking. Around 30, it did start to effect my mental health a bit. I would get a bit irrational with depressive thoughts, when out drinking, but it was not very often at all so ignored it.
A few years back it started to get a bit more regular, so I would start to refuse to go out. I then had a very rough time in my life so went completely sober for about 18 months. Was not difficult, thought it would be, especially as I had to have the help of a friend who lived in a shared house and used to throw mental all night parties, but I was surprised at how easy it was for me not to even have a sip, even in that environment.
I then started to get mentally stronger, so started on Radler (Shandy), as they make some really nice ones here. If you ever get a chance to try Becks Ice - Lime & Mint, it is gorgeous, perfect hot day drink (after a cider).
Anyway, now I have the odd drink here and there, in the past year there have been 2 large sessions. One when I returned to Liverpool for the first time in 5 years and met up with a couple of mates who I hadn't seen in that long, and one a couple of weekends ago when I met up with the same guys in Amsterdam to see Metallica.
