Player Valuation: Free Transfer
Ok first post and an interesting one - (to be judged). Browsed and read much here for a while but never really had anything above the norm to say so have not posted before. Anyway...

Played golf today in our clubs 'Captain Away Day' and was playing in a 3 ball with Colin Gordon, aka footy agent for Steve McLaren amongst others. Proper down to earth bloke and a good laugh in the face of some s***e golf today!

Now I didn't actually know who he was at the time (just google searched on arrival back home) but when we got in from playing, the story of Keegan sacked was all over sky sports news in the clubhouse. It sparked a football conversation about much of what happened over the window. He was talking about many of the deals that happened and indeed about the transfers he was involved in.

I won't bore you with the much of what he said but pertaining to Everton the main story was regarding Alan Smith.

A deal was brokered middle/end of last week for Alan Smiths transfer for 1.8million to EFC. This deal was done, awaiting Kenwright's confirmation and Gordon was the agent or at least heavily involved. The ball was in Ken's court but the story is that he refused to make the call, deciding to make Newcastle 'sweat' over the deal to try and reduce the price. When the call was made, NC turned round (rightly if Colin Gordon was talking the truth) and told Ken to pay 3.5million or the deal was off.

That ended the proposition for both parties.

Have to say sitting there listening to him recount the story I had absolutely no reason to disbelieve him, indeed, the collapse of this lost him a few quid and he was less than happy with Kenwright's role and called him a few names over the 19th hole beer - in summary the most arrogant chairman he has dealt with.

Interesting stuff, Smith for 1.8million? For that price, even though he hasn't exactly proved much since he left Leeds, I would personally consider that a good signing for EFC. Particularly when u consider the cost of Saha who lets face it is one hell of a gamble for us at the 2.5m (nor sure on fee) or whatever fee paid for him.

Never been a Ken basher but after hearing what he said about the way he handled this I must say my attitude has shifted somewhat, like I said - no reason to disblelieve the bloke at the time.

If the money wasn't there because of the fellani deal etc then fair enough but at 1.8m to lose out on Smith because of his arrogance then that smacks of poor Chairmanship, and perhaps offers some direction as to why we performed so poorly in the market the last few weeks.

Anybody else heard anything of this?

Long live EFC.

firstly, agents dont give a flying fuckberry how players get on, its all about the fees to them.

secondly, worst person to deal with ever? is this a person representing a newcastle employee in light of the rooney bid? REALLY?

for a first post, im smelling some feint whiffs of something.

colin gordon, right or left hander?

Wouldn't disbelieve that but without wanting to defend Ken Wrong's actions it sounds a bit of sour grapes on his part i.e. being cut out of a fee.

That price was definitely worth a crack and who knows may come around again in Jan.

Right hander matey.

Only recounting what he said - whether he can be trusted I dont know the bloke. To be honest sitting there I couldn't believe I was actually hearing what he was saying.

I'm an average bloke who never comes across anything like this...

But I absolutely promise he said it but obviously can't vouch for fact...

Everton missed out on striker target Alan Smith on deadline day after discovering his price tag had gone up.

Everton believed they already had a £2.8m deal agreed and expected Smith to arrive for a medical to clinch the move.

But they walked away from the transfer when Newcastle asked for more money to complete the move.

Everton had spent the summer chasing Smith and thought they had him in the bag in August after brokering a deal, but Kevin Keegan’s refusal to sanction the transfer stalled the switch.

They made their second move after Newcastle gave the forward the green light to give his career a fresh start last week.

But the late change in his price tag forced Everton to reconsider their options and they backed out of the deal.

...

an average bloke on a days golf and a few rounds at the 19th with a top football agent.

im going to be nice... im a suspicious C**T, and cynical beyond disrepair.

why register now? why choose to decide to throw this story up on a forum you havnt been seen on prior?

i'll be honest, this smacks a little of the guy that knows the groundsman who happens to be in with the security guard that minds all the cars syndrome.

hope you are genuine, gut feeling says you are not.

Lol mate sry - nothing I can do to prove it. Seems the story has already broken anyway according to Dom's quoted post. Only the figures quoted are different to what he said. Was definately 1.8m according to him anyway.

Old news anyway - ah well!

Hehe no worries - cheers for the welcomes lads...

I assumed this reaction which is why i asked if anyone else had heard anything that could back this up.

Just found his reasoning for the collapse interesting but I guess when you factor in his loss of cash then he could find any direction to the lay the blame.

Still, on my way to 1000 posts ;)

forget post count, surely you knew you were on a golf day out well before you teed off.

lets not play silly arses. its not a personal thing, remember who it is you are dealing with, especially in terms of exclusive ground breaking news.

hopefully i and/or no one else has put you off giving the GOT forum a trial.

The golf day is my local club which my Dad's the current captain, I only went to fill the numbers to help him out so there was no pre planning on my part. When he told me what grp I was in he said your with Colin Gordon an ex footballer. Meant nothing to me his name tbh.

Anyway , nah mate I'll be around - like I said - something like this is ridiculous to come from a stranger so I fully understand your cynicism, indeed we all read the daily crap posted everywhere so its well founded and understood - no offence taken dude.

Browsed here for a while and NSNO but never got involved - guess thats about to change ;)

The Toon could also lose Alan Smith in a loan deal to Everton.
Smith was lined up for a summer move to Goodison before a row blew up over his future that began the end of Kevin Keegan’s reign at St James’ Park.

Smith, 28, was injured soon after the transfer window closed and is still on the comeback trail after ankle surgery.

But Everton chief David Moyes is poised to swoop to solve a striker crisis, with Louis Saha crocked and Yakubu out for the season.

Reports the Sun, well it wouldnt be the transfer window without the link would it. Its like an old friend!

I doubt this will happen, he's been injured all season and his injury record is up there with both Vaughan and Saha's. He's also a poor player, would offer us nothing.
