Alan Ball

I remember hearing rumours that he may be leaving, and watched 'News at Ten' every night to see if it had happened. I NEVER watched the news, i was only ten. After a week I was starting to think it wasn't going to happen...then suddenly "big football news today, the Everton and England world cup winner, Alan Ball has signed for Arsenal in a British record transfer deal...."

Still remember it staring at the TV screen in disbelief, even though I had been expecting it I couldn't accept that it would happen.

If you saw on the news tomorrow that Tim Cahill had signed for Chelsea, how would you feel. Multiply it by 1000. That's how bad it was.

Perhaps you move in higher circles but there were no rumours. Thats why it was such a shock. Like your best mate having a brain haemorrhage. Just like the CRACK! from the book depository window in Dallas. Typical Catterick. The Press didn't get a sniff until the deal was done. Neither did Bally. I am ashamed to say it but I still haven't recovered. It was a life changing moment. So much so that everything about it seems like yesterday. And there were no rumours. No clue about the cataclysm that was about to befall us. No-one from the Echo or Post knew about it. Not even Alan himself had a clue. I wish I could have more of a sense of humour about it, but 40 years on, I can't.

Being generally BLESSED as I am - An' VERY Thankful for it , too , Big Man , in case your Signed In , Dude ,...I spoke to Bally on this VERY issue for about 10 minutes .

He SWORE he did not wish to go , had certainly not asked to , and even when informed it was DONE , asked if there was ANY way of reversing it ??? The lads are right , it was Catt' playing Power Politics , again .
I WANTED to ask about Sweden . I truly did , but even though it was on the very tip of my tongue , I refrained . It was Bally . Let's have some fukn respect , here , if you DO NOT MIND .

Thing was though , we were ALL losers . Catt' NEVER held anything like the authority nor psuedo-affection he had previously ; we were just fukn depressed for 5 years or more ; and Bally , while very good at Highbury ,.. it was NOT Goodison Park . L44EL . Thus , he was not King of the Goddamned World . As he had been here .

Cheers , Catt' .

The time I spent talking to my lifelong Hero , is , as regulars on here already have heard - A LOT , my finest 30/45 minutes as a Blue . I can say no more than that .

I am , as I admit , Blessed .
