In simple terms they didn't have the recruitment structure in place to spend the windfall from the CL semi-final run and player sales well.

That the board chose to put all their eggs in the "let's hope Overmars doesn't get exposed (ahem)" basket speaks volumes.

The Borna Sosa deal is interesting because on paper he looks like a decent piece of business. Tall, athletic versatile left sided player who came from a higher quality league. Fully expect there to be more to this story.

Dusan Tadic - their best player - was given a free transfer because they sold all their better players and he didn't want to stay. Pretty much sums up the situation.
