Airport scams

My Dad has a story of travelling out of Cameroon in the late 70s/early 80s and going to the airport with 2000 fags to ensure he got to his flight trouble free.
Last time I flew into Phnom Penh, instead of waiting in the queue for visa checks, a guy just went to another desk with 5 dollars so he could get checked straight away instead of waiting.

Im wondering if you work in the industry or have been hypnotised into disagreeing with what seems a fairly blatant rip off and my commonly accepted point of view!

Openly advertised - when you're effectively operating a profiteering monopoly with price fixing between airports does not equate to value or reasonable costs - ergo rip off.

Sure you have choice not to travel having seen the prices (add ons in small print legally exploiting those with poor eye sight or those who struggle to read or comprehend reams of terms and conditions) - but the peer pressure amongst a population who look at you oddly if you choose not to fly around the globe to satisfy a whim to sit by a pool and get drunk is pretty intense.

Car parking is by far the biggest ripoff - leeching off the back of the extortionate cost of rail travel.
I think you are confusing what you deem to be over priced with an actual scam.

Not really - I see any rip off or overpriced service as a scam. Just because the authorities accept it, legalise it (and clearly accept tax benefit from it) - doesn't mean it's not a scam in my eyes.

Everything about airports in the uk is legalised scamming with authorities consent.

Odd that we live in a modern society where social justice warriors furiously attack anybody who makes an innocent mistake over gender, says something that just ONE individual might twist as being racist, sits in the centre over equality rather than being ultra feminist - yet there is silence at corporations repeated and merciless exploitation of the stupid, gullible or innocent.

Seems you can get away with a lot in the uk so long as you're collecting money- it's good business, its innovative, it entrepreneurial.
What's your thoughts on hotels jacking prices up when there's major events on. That's the biggest legal scam of all i reckon.

On a barge forum (there is such a thing) a few years back I was "engaged in debate" with a barge owner who was also a senior tory party economic advisor. I'll add here that he was also an arrogant lady part.

His point if view is that if boats were queuing, waiting their turn at a lock and he was in a hurry, then he should be allowed to pay the lock keeper to let him go first.

I argued that the negotiation and consequent payment should not be with the lock keeper, but with every boater in the queue - it is THEIR time he is stealing by jumping a queue.

For all his undoubted economic education he absolutely could not see my reasoning. He could not see beyond only his OWN desire to get what HE wanted - everybody else was of no consequence. Typical tory.

If it’s so overpriced then here’s your chance to provide a better air travel experience. Travelers would love your cheaper prices and there’s still enough profit for you to get silly rich.
Arsed with that.

Having to pay all the relevant authorities their protection racket bribes .... sorry permission fees .. sorry licence fees to start up.

Anyway - with regard to the environment I'm happy to have never flown in 22 years and instead proudly enjoy some of the most beautiful and diverse landscape on the planet in my own country.
