They were like Benfica. Huge in that time - but like Benfica, never replicated it in a more modern mass media era. They were dominant just before colour TV, so suffer, somewhat unfairly, in the modern consciousness.

When Mourinho took them to the CL title in 2010, that team was already in the veteran stage and Mourinho had set his sights on more glamorous pursuits, so they couldn't make hay then either.
But if you look at honours won for Inter in 62-67 and Milan 89-94, it's quite similar.

It is, but my point is the game by the 1980s was a much bigger showbiz event - and the standard was higher. In the black and white era, Inter and Benfica might as well be Preston North End or Dixie's Everton.

Serie A in the 1980s and 1990s, when Milan were dominant, was unquestionably the greatest league in the world - and would have showcased the highest standard of football ever played up until that point. When Inter won their three titles in the 1960s, it was just another strong continental league with an appeal that didn't go much further than its own borders. Certainly, people in South America weren't getting TV coverage of Serie A on anything approaching a regular basis.

So, timing is everything. Berlusconi and the satellite TV revolution showcased Milan at their absolute best worldwide. Inter's great era was a dusty book by comparison.

Aren’t they? Ooh, how about Matthäus, Rummenigge, Klinsmann, Brady, Fachetti, Mazzola, Suarez, Altobelli, Bergomi, Zanetti, Brehme, Passarella…

Both among the greatest clubs on planet football.
And I'm after leaving out the great Luis Figo, one of the all-time greats and one of my all-time favourite players. Imagine him on one wing, Rummenigge on the other, Matthäus and Brady in the centre... I'd take those four against absolutely anyone ever. They might not win every game, but imagine what they'd do collectively...

English speakers bastardize everyone's name. I mean who the hell is Bayern Munich?
Everyone bastardize names or call places differently in their languages, for example Italians call Munich "Monaco di Baviera" (literally Monaco of Bavaria).
We in ex-Yugoslavia call Vienna "Beč" for example, French call Netherlands Pays-Bas, Germany got countless different names (Allemagne, Saxony, Njemačka, Deutschland etc...)

Anyway think Milan is bigger, simply cause European titles. What holds them back now is lack of sugar daddies (like Berlusconi was for them in the 90s). Also Italian economical situation, while North Italy is one of the richest places in whole world, South (everything below Rome) is very poor, its enormous economical and cultural divide North-South in Italy.

Its almost racist how Northerners look at Southerners there (especially Naples), divide is such that marriage between Northerner and Southerner could divide/destroy whole families.

In Germany they're called Bayern München, which is exactly the same. I think all countries bastardize though. As mentioned before, Germans "bastardize" a lot of English clubs. FC Everton, FC Liverpool, Arsenal London, etc. They call Tottenham "Die Spurs". There are probably lost of examples I'm missing.

The club we refer to as AC Milan are generally just called Milan in Italy. The derby is Milan v Inter.

In the same way Real Madrid are never called 'Real' in Spain. Just 'Madrid' And the derby is Madrid v Atletico.

Have to say Milan is bigger than Inter by virtue of their superior European record.

Milan had some era defining performances as well. Beating Real 5-0 in the semi of the EC or thrashing Crujff's Dream Team 4-0. Despite having arguably the best back 4 the game has ever seen they were capable of some sexy football. By contrast, Inter collected some of the sexiest footballers of their generation and made chumps out of them. Guys like Bergkamp and Pancev looked like they'd never kicked a ball in an Inter shirt. It was incredible.

Don’t worry!

Hahaha every now and then people can be wrong! Myself included! My point still stands that there’s been a huge English influence, just not in the ways I thought lol
Defo mate. The English introduced association football to the world. As the super power of the 19th century, British sailors were in ports all over the world.
British engineers and workers set up a lot of the rail networks in South America and English clubs toured leaving the greatest game in the world to be improved by Johnny foreigner lol

Who does GOT consider the bigger club ? they share the same stadium, have near identicle attendances and have the same amount of titles so are far more evenly matched than we are with Liverpool.

Personally, I've always considered AC Milan the bigger club but I think that's purely down to the 90s. A couple of guys in their early-mid 20's at work think Inter are the bigger club.

What say you GOT ?
Yeah, 90s AC Milan always make me think 'giants'. But in truth they're both absolute gargantuan football institutions individually and as a dyad. I personally can't think of one without the other coming to mind. They both have periods of success and being less successful too.

Would be great to see those 4 together, but I would take Rijkaard, Donadoni, Gullit and Van Basten over them every day of the week. (And they did play together)

Especially with Baresi and Maldini behind them.
