A lone Evertonian, alone no more...

Last night was quite an experience. Let me give you some context. Btw, this is going to go on for a while, so move on if you don't have the time or inclination.

I am from the land of SEC football and folks who are considered knowledgable if they are aware that Chelsea dresses in blue while ManU is kitted out in red. My first life's experience of seeing a match surrounded by evertonians was last night. It was beyond wonderful.

First, from the stewards to the bizzies, to the regular guy in the pub, everyone was just so NICE. Spent the trip on the soccer bus on the way over talking with other arl arses about things Everton and how I came to be where I was and why. Some were amazed to see this guy from Florida who knew who Dixie was, others not so much.

Spent several minutes by Dixie's statue with some stewards helping get the tickets sorted with which box office to go to for what, and actually got sorted out perfectly in an Old School manner in minutes. Walked thru Walton checking out the yout swilling lager in the McDs parking lot, and the seemingly dozens of pubs packed out to the curb (whoops, kerb) with those prepping for the game. A certain WUM gave me a reason to trek to the Thomas for a brew, where I got to see young men doing shots in front of some orange girls while conversing with very dialed in youngsters sporting blue jerseys and football knowledge. It was very comfortable, actually.

Then, back to Goodison, in the turnstile, up the stairs, up the escalator to the aerie of the top balcony, where we were packed in elbow to elbow, toes to bums with folks peering over the edge to our favorite perfect pitch. Hearing Z cars, seeing the intro, hearing the snap of the sound of the Gwladys Street hitting my ears like a well placed left cross, and watching our heroes bury a pretty good Wolfsburg side, we'll... What do you think. How good was it? It was the pure sex, that's what it was. Pointed out Bobby's brown brogues to my love, and heard her say "you know, this is so much better than what we used to get at the Jags games".

Back to the bus/train and back to central city. Crashed in a heap after our unique 36 hours since walking out our door in JAX.

As Joe Jackson once sang back in the day, "it's a big world, with so much to do". Finally, a lone Evertonian was no longer alone.

Got to be up there.

I can't believe this was nearly a year ago ! @mezzrow said he'd be wearing some sort of baseball cap in the pub and I did wonder if we'd be able to spot him. I shouldn't have worried, it wasn't exactly tricky to spot two Americans sat in the boozer !

Anyway, with all the focus on transfer windows, friendlies , arguments, stress and excitement about the new season it's easy to forget that Evertonians are a huge family, spread across the world, and not everyone's lucky enough to be able to get to Goodison quickly and easily.

Hopefully the likes of @Emmagood, @Aerin and others will have similar tales to tell soon !

Thanks for dragging that one up, given me a warm fuzzy feeling. Reminded me why I love our infuriating team. Like an unruly Labrador

....I love the fact that we have proper fans who live afar. Its not trendy or easy supporting the Blues but it is special.

Everton through and through, 25 and I cant remember any real success ( I was 5 in 1995) but the excitement of match day and the tune of Z CARS, gives me goosebumps like nothing else.

If there's going to be all this SEC talk, I suspect Big Bret would have Everton playing proper hoofball with a 4-4-2. Would probably spend all the budget on Andy Carroll, maybe even dig Heskey out of retirement too.
Would much prefer Gus Malzahn to be Everton's SEC based manager.

As much as dislike them both, hard to pass up on Saban/Jose

Those that understand need no explanation. God bless.

Thanks to all who have liked and commented. Hard to believe its been almost a year.

Just go, America. You can do it. Scousers are the world's finest hosts. Everton One/Two await your open credit lines. It's the only way you'll ever get the merch you want. You'll have a laugh at the jarg American college gear though. Giant bloke at the door of the Tommy Frost had a "University of Alexander City" shirt on that had me almost in tears. He could have broken me in half, so I stowed most of my questions about said kit.

Only funny if you've actually been to Alexander City, in which I have a few generations of family - it's a little milltown in central Alabama close to Lake Martin where the mill up and took off about twenty years ago. They have a little JC, but their University is really down the road at Auburn.

If you're really, really lucky, you'll get to talk rasslin' with @Mikey_Fitzgerald, the only man in GOT brave enough to show his face, and marvel at the handsome beaks on @Woolly Blue, @tommye and @Dutch Toffee (hi, belg!) . There may even be a megahead sighting, but only if he isn't merely a belief system rather than a corporeal being. The only way to know is to go.
