A Defence for Koeman?

I'd like to see some honesty from the top of the club about the way it is being run. My view on this is that Moshiri saw an opportunity to invest in a club with a large number of playing assets which was being poorly run and one that he could invest a little into, sort out the ground and sell on for a large profit. To that extent i think his overriding priority is to stay in the Premiership whilst this happens. I think that he picked Koeman as the manager for the main reason that he thought he could do this whilst also staying in the top 6/7 clubs. Anything more would be a bonus but i don't think he (Moshiri) is actually striving to get there. I think the transfer expenditure bears this out. Personally I don't rate Koeman and wouldn't lose any sleep if he went tomorrow but if what i suspect is the case then he and we deserve to know exactly where we stand. If what I suspect above is correct then I think we need to take a different approach, give Unsworth a go on a temporary basis, with a view to developing the outstanding group of younger players that we have and supplementing them with other players to try and build a team that will challenge for the top 4 and the title. If Unsworth isn't up to it then we need to look for a coach who is proven in developing younger players and substantially over achieving with his resources. I don't believe that Koeman is that manager.

Tuchel or Unsworth? I don't think so with them being in safe jobs. If we turn into a club getting rid of managers after a few poor results then we are in Allerdyce and Redknapp territory. Like it or not no safe managers will look at us.

I think thats the risk of another sacking mate. Those two would perhaps be more natural fits though? The key question is whether we see Koeman as along term fit?

Absolutely madness to call out Koeman after a few bad results against Chelsea, Spurs and Man Utd...and replace him with big Sam or meltface...is this a joke? Koeman got 7th last season and this is 5 games into his 2nd season. People would sack a manager who lost a couple of games against Sky6 just wow.

Despite all of the good business the club has done in the window; purchasing good young players, I find incredible, indefensible fault in Koeman's team selections, poor substitutions, and failures in managing key players such as Barkley & Mirallas.

Additionally, Wayne Rooney's homecoming is the worst thing that has happened to the club during my tenure of support. If Koeman had a part in that, it would be the nail in the coffin for me.

Without this, I still want him out, but understand the wisdom of cooler heads calling for patience; and this suppresses my outrage. With that said we must admit that further failures in team selection, substitutions, and individual player management over the next month must certainly result in the manager's replacement.

Overall, wonderful post. I greatly enjoyed reading it, and taking the opportunity to examine another perspective and temper my own opinions against such. Thank you for the contribution.

You're welcome mate, and as with everyone else I appreciate you taking the time to read it and comment.

My intention is certainly not to convince people he should stay, I think there are some genuine concerns. How do you think he compares to previous managers, such as Martinez or Moyes? Have you ever wanted Everton managers sacked before? What can he do to turn it around for you if anything? Who would you like to see being brought in to replace him?

I'm very much on the fence. But I've been burnt by the two previous managers who at different times I was heavily behind and in both cases I was probably too uncritical, so trying not to give Koeman such an easy pass!

Savage's article today...

Honestly, why did some people expect a quick fix after spending the Lukaku money? These Sky teams have been spending miles more for about 10 seasons.

Koeman seems on par with Martinez to me; just different styles. I believe Koeman is a more talented manager but feels apathetic towards Everton's long term goals. I felt that Martinez was genuinely invested in the club; where as I get that feeling that Koeman is only as invested in Everton's success as it enables him to reach his goal to be boss at Camp Nou. With that in mind, I didn't give up on Martinez until the players did down the stretch, but I wasn't bothered by him being sacked and found his inability to accept blame most aggravating. Had he not lacked that certain level of grit needed in football, I think things may have went better for him with Everton.

Ultimately the thing I want most from a future manager is cultivation. I want the boss to be invested in developing all aspects of the club and committed to our long term goals. Some passion would be nice, someone who gets fired up when the lads grab a result out of determination alone. I want a manager that cultivates that sort of environment that engages the players and motivates them towards success.

I like how Eddie Howe goes about his business at Bournemouth; however, I think much of that is due to him spending nearly all of his career with the club, both as a player and coaching. I think David Unsworth would be a good candidate to do work in a similar vein for us. Even if Unsworth proves not to be as talented a manager as Koeman, I believe the change to more gritty, determined football would be a positive. Its a tough call because that would not necessarily be the sexiest choice and would likely hurt us in attracting new players to the squad; however, with our current crop of quality youth players we may just need to develop those we already have which Unsworth has shown he is more than capable of doing.

Well done, good read.

However I'm not a fan of raw statistics surrounding us finishing 7th without Lukaku's goals. I can't name a specific instance where this occurred or even if it ever occurred but even speaking generally, say Lukaku scored to make it 2-0. Without that goal, what if the other side had scored an equalizer since they still had some fight in them at that point? It's about timing of goals too, and there's no real statistical way to differentiate that.

I don't know that there's any way you could convince me Lukaku wasn't absolutely instrumental in our squad. Not saying that's what this write up is trying to do, but the hard facts are we really won't find another like him any time soon, barring an incredible young player proving himself and scoring consistently.
