7th -> EL what does it take

Only kopites think the EL is a nothing trophy - when they're not in it. It's a major trophy.

On the subject of the EL, I totally disagree with the teams who get knocked out of the CL parachuting into the EL. Cheapens the competition if you ask me - as far as I'm concerned, if you get knocked out of Europe then you're out. You shouldn't be getting a second chance against teams who have earned their places in the EL.

It needs avoiding like the plague.

I hope Southampton win the LC, and another PL club not in any European spot makes the final. I think that does the trick in terms of steering us away from the poison chalice.

Players want to play in Europe mate... shows the club is moving the the right direction... also gives you a chance at another trophy and CL qualification... not to mention the fans get to go around Europe .... why would you not want it?

I agree... I don't see how you can qualify for a decent comp by losing games ... makes no sense and cheapens it... should get rid of that rule and give all the leagues another spot for qualification...

Yeah if it hasn't been said already...

It relies on a bit of fortune going our way.... but it's not ridiculous fortune.

  1. United beat Southampton in EFL Cup final
  2. United/City/Chelsea/Spurs/Arsenal win the FA Cup (they've abolished the runners up rule. So to be in it, you have to win it)
  3. Everton finishing 7th (or higher)
So as long as we're finishing the season in 7th, theres a nice possibility of being able to dust off our passports come July.... (Pray for somewhere warm!)

Oh, and it for arguments sake the favourites all win their cup ties...
The final 8 of the cup could be

Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, City, United, Leicester, Boro and Burnley. Keep the big teams apart and that part could be interesting!

You say that like we can actually do anything about it? Other than deliberately finish lower, not really in our hands is it mate. Not worth complaining about. If we're in it, we're in it, so it's a chance of a trophy, and another route into CL.

Sky did an article (in 2015) looking at British teams in EL. 8 out 25 teams equalled or bettered their league position, from the previous year, with 17 teams finishing lower when in EL.

So would seem to have an impact, but by no means is a certainty that you end up worse off.

...I think an EL place is allocated to the League Cup winners so if United win it an extra league place counts. If the FA Cup winners are in the Champions League, the runners up get the EL spot (I think).

No, Eggs......that practice has been stoped.

No runners up in the domestic cups will enter the EL by dint of losing that final.

Another scenario is either Spurs or United winning the EL and finishing outside the top four.

Then they will go into the CL next season.

So if I am understanding this correctly, provided the two cups are won by teams finishing in the top six then the team finishing 8th will join the 7th placed team in the EL :)

..cheers, Matey. I did actually look it up and posted an update. You're right, the runners up rule changed in 2015.
