79 points for 4th...is this an anomaly?

I don't get why people think the RS are going to fade away? They have just qualified for the CL, they will have plenty of cash and will end up strengthening their crap defence. I fully expect them to 'come again' next season.
Because
1) Ratboy is away, he's served his punishment for his bitey incident (not being allowed to leave for another year) and he'll be at Real Madrid before you know it.
2) Gerrard is 34 in a few days and can't drive them on singlehandedly in the same way anymore.
3) Liverpool's position is slightly false due to Chelsea, Man City and to a lesser extent Arsenal all being really inconsistent leading to them all dropping silly points all over the place. ManUre have been rotten and nowhere near this season. You can't expect them all to have as bad a season as they've had this year.

Yes they will get a mountain of cash for Ratboy but that won't be enough to replace his goals. The goals will dry up to some expect and even with an improvement in defence they'll be nearer to us pushing for 4th than at the top.

This season proves that as long as we can improve ourselves, there is no need to give a toss about who other clubs sign. We were not far (first three draws in transitional period and freak defeat to Sunderland) from fourth at all, in fact the way we lost out make me think we can be stronger next season having learnt from the mistakes made, just look at the way we anihilated Arsenal in both league fixtures with our way of playing, there is no reason to believe we can't achieve 81-84 points next year, so long as the right moves are made this summer and I believe with this manager, they will be.

We won 21 of 38 games (and drew 9). That's 30 positive results out of 38. We probably deserved a few more points but luck plays a great part in what you get - we certainly deserved to win at Cardiff (and were denied a penalty), at least a point at home to Sunderland, away to Chelsea and so on. There weren't many games when we stole points having played poorly. So, with a bit more luck (and a couple of decent referees) we might have got a few more points. We just have to do a bit better in the 6 pointers (City for example).

Yep, we can extrapolate - for next season - on the basis that United surely can't get any worse.. The RS will have to maintain that momentum (and maybe without Ratty but with CL to contend with). Chelsea will no doubt build on this season - Spurs will too.

I would also take the World Cup into the equation and how all our rivals have most of their first teams on summer duty.. it's a big plus for us.

As things stand at the moment I'd put the probable top 7 in this order for next season:

1 City 2 Chelsea 3 Arsenal 4= United (if improving the squad), Liverpool, 6 Everton 7 Spurs.. but it's very close for me from 3rd down.

The simple answer is yes.

The average points the 4th placed team in the premier league era has achieved is 68.8pts. This has only increased from 68.2 to 69.4pts from the first 11 seasons to the second 11. The range is 63-79 pts.
Interestingly though, the avg pts for the 4th bottom side is 39.5pts, this has declined sharply from 42 pts to 37 pts in the same periods (range 34-49).
It is quite obvious then that the teams at the bottom are gradually getting weaker.

Despite better finances ! Doesn't make any sense

I'd be very happy if you turn out to be correct mate, but I think you are deluding yourself and that the RS are going to be challenging at the top end of the table for the next few years.

It is by no means guaranteed that rat boy will leave, and if he doesn't then they only need to sort their defence and they will continue to blitz most of the teams they come up against. If he does leave then they will have a shed load of cash to spend!

We had a great season and finished on 72 points this year, which would have been enough for CL qualification in all but one of the last five years and all but two of the previous ten. Yet we came in 7 points off that elusive fourth spot.

My question is, is this season an aberration? Will 70ish points be enough to take 4th in coming years, as in years past, or has the standard at the lower half of the league become so relatively poor that it's going to require 75-80 points for top 4 going forward? If so, what do we need to target such a total?

why worry; like this season only more so, target 90 get 92 and leave the minor placings to sort themselves out

sure mate with a squad of 16 and europa league, we'll be fine as long as no one gets injured ever.
