Great news, the reality is we need to qualify for the CL in the next 2-3 seasons to ensure he signs the next one. He's going to be massive in terms of us pushing to qualify but we need to keep this squad to together and add quality.
This window - Top Centre Forward.
Next summer - Top Centre Half.
Following summer - Top Goal Keeper.

Utterly brilliant news. He is absolutely something special, there's no telling how good he will be this coming season let alone in three or four years.

I don't worry about him leaving, at least not any time soon. Massive chance he ends up a Blue for life.

We already have a top centre half, his name's John Stones and he's going to be world class

What we need is more squad depth, that's the ultimate difference between us and the top sides. When we get a couple of injuries we're in trouble, when the top sides get injuries they've got quality players to replace them. You can't expect to compete with the top sides if you're bench is made up with lads who were playing for the youth team the previous week

Our bench is no longer made up of youth players and I'm not suggesting just buy one player a year. But we can only really afford one top class player.

I don't disagree that Stones is top notch but Jags will be 32-33 season after this one and the milkman will surely have had enough by then.

You can dress up the extension of contracts and signing on of players already familiar to us as huge change. If that's what you want. I see it as consolidation. It's not change in the sense we all knew that term to represent going into this summer. Back then we all knew what change would be and what would represent inertia. Well, we have a lot of time to go sure, but at this stage the club hasn't done very much to effect positive change. I say that you're setting them way too low a bar to negotiate if you see this window as dynamic.

See the bolded bit mate; I never said we'd been dynamic, but I'm still not sure that not being dynamic is a valid definition of inertia.

The bellwhiffs have been out in force today, we all know kopites are gob-shites but after reading this thread it appears we have a fair few supporting us too.
Ross Barkley has the potential to be a huge star in world football, he has just announced he has signed a long term contract with his boy-hood club, this is good news. We should shout from the rooftops.

i was thinking the same thing, this press conference is showing the premier league teams we have ambition and we aint selling out hot prospects or anyone. we aint skint no more. we have the best manager in the league, best hot prospects. and we are going places.
Well done Everton......its like a new signing...(ducks)

I really can't see anything but good news here. Even if his plan is another year & a big money move next season, that would still mean he plays a belter of a season with us (if he wants to attract interest) possibly getting us to CL, and we'd get even bigger money than if we sold him now.

Personally, I hope in 2-3 years we're negotiating an extension for our European Player of the Year.

These contractual extensions are vital . Therein, Everton is sowing the seed for future (hopefully imminent) success. It is now up to RM and the team to effect that ambition. Virtuous circle is in play (as opposed to the backs to the wall financial fight our club has fought for 20 odd years whereby talent was sold).
Everton FC is re-emerging

In hindsight this is the best Everton news regarding a player for as much as I've known them. I was just holding hope that it was a Lukaku announcement that my vision was blurred. I was kinda thinking 'why make a song and dance on Sky' but it's a way of telling the world to [Poor language removed] off. When Coleman signed it it was so under the radar that it annoyed me I wanted all the United fans to get a big whiff of it. It's all ya ever hear from them when we have a decent player ya can't just have a conversation about how good a Everton player is they just tell ya how United will sign him if he is lucky enough and how could an Everton player resist? I hate when they say it to you trying to be sincere and not having banter.
I loved how he gave Rooney a mention and how we felt. Righted a few wrongs in my heart today Barkley did. It was a good day.

A good percentage of the forum have been happy to remain patient and trust the manager during this window. Quite how Ross signing a new contract caused such a mini-meltdown, I'm not sure I'll ever know.
