If the US wasn't a host country, I'd worry for USMNT morale, but I think they'll be motivated regardless in this case.

This World Cup could go like 94 which was ultra boring due to the weather at some of the venues.

I think the bigger factor then was the 24 team field with 16 advancing to the knockouts. The group stage was dreadfully dull.

Russia's 3-1 win against the Netherlands in 2008 was also a special performance. Arshavin launched himself.

I love that game. Highly underrated. The two Dutch matches in 1992 against Germany and, especially, Denmark were also classics.

One of the truly great games, that. Perhaps the best England performance at a World Cup since 1966. That said, the fact that Argentina couldn't put away 10 men probably told the tale of why they were never going to win that tournament and, inevitably, they ran into Bergkamp in the very next round...

Qatar waltzing into the world cup. Throw in a friendly loss to Zimbabwe and Ireland.
And they're probably not the worst team at the tournament.

And the German shallacking of Brazil.

I know the tournament as a whole was pretty dire (but simultaneously fantastic), but the West German team beating a really strong Yugoslavia 4-1 in 1990 was also super impressive.
