I rarely post here, but I thought I would go ahead and provide my thoughts regarding the season just completed.

Overall, I am pleased that Everton finished 5th. At the start of the season I thought at best Everton should do no worse than 6th. I was very happy that we held 4th place for quite a while. That said, I was a bit disappointed that the side struggled down the stretch to hold onto 5th. It's obvious that we've made strides to push towards the top four, but we still lack quality depth to get through the long season.

I was very happy how the team played in the UEFA Cup. After the scare of Metalist, we dominated group play and almost got past a decent Fiotentina side. I think Everton will likely do as well (or better next year) - we definitely have what it takes to win the UEFA Cup.

Yakubu, Pienaar, and Jagielka were welcome additions and fit in well with the squad. Manny came in January and while he took a while to get fit and settle back into the EPL, he did show some of the potential we all know he has (especially last two games against Villa and Newcastle).

Negatives were Moyes playing Neville in midfield, Arteta not playing up to his superb self (obvious with him carrying an injury second half of season), Cahill getting injured again, and constant hoof-ball/lack of midfield creativity to properly feed Yak and AJ up front.

Standouts of this years team were Lescott, Pienaar, Cahill, Yakabu, Yobo, Howard, and Jagielka. Osman also played well, although was a bit inconsistent. I'd give the nod to Lescott as he is now getting the credit/attention he so rightly deserves (one of the best defenders in Europe).

Areas to address - right back (Neville should only play here, but ideally should be replaced - maybe Jags?); get Lescott back into the center where he belongs and Baines as starting left back; sign Manny on a permanent basis (pay the $12 million if need be - obviously, if you can get him cheaper, do so; but don't let him get away); Find 2 quality midfielders (other than Manny) - one to replace Carsley and the other to compete with Osman/Cahill/Arteta (Osman likely the odd-man out of Cahill and Arteta are fit) - at worst, 1 quality mid-fielder (other than Manny - say Arshavin, Cana, Kallstrom, etc.) and one with a potential to become quality (Bradley, Barnes from Derby); need one more forward, preferably a target man with a good first touch that can work with Yak in a 4-4-2. Ideally would be Vaughn, but no guarentee he isn't injury prone. Victor is OK, but long term isn't looking to be Prem material (given where we want to be headed). AJ also OK, but needs fed from midfield on floor, not hoofed from back to utilize his strengths.

Long term - youngsters such as Gosling, Rodwell, Ruddy, and Baxter should transition nicely into squad at some point in future and add much needed depth.

Finally - Board needs to stop dicking around and sign Moyes to a new long-term deal (5+ years) as well as start ponying up the cash so Moyes can get the additional quality players we need (30 million - 10-12 for Manny and 18-20 million for other two.)

last august, if i were told the season would unfold as it has, i would have been very happy, especially considerin the money spent by west ham spurs city and villa....
...and i am still very happy

Well done everton for finishing 5th..

This year we had a huge chance of winning something major, the UEFA cup, but once more like all cup competitions where raped, because we where simply not good enough.
We attempted to stay in 4th, but the little girls who play for us, where over emotional, they went on a binge of loosing matches, that put paid to 4th..injuries aside..you cant use that as a valid excuse, we had the players..even moyes admitted this himself. We where kicked out of the fa cup first time of asking by a [Poor language removed] team.

Big whoop we got 5th..imo we should have finished 4th, and won the UEFA cup, and possibly the carling cup...instead we struggle to finish 5th, ironically with 5 points clear and 10+ points behind the [Poor language removed]...overall verdict, should of could have done much better than our overall performance, imo we under performed, especially firorentina 1st leg,

we are miles away from the top 4, 1 point from 24 is simply not acceptable..not when other teams such as city can beat utd, and arsenal have been beaten and chelski by worse teams than us.

Next season: moyes needs putting under pressure, we need more points against the top 4, similary the board must be put under pressure to cough up the money moyes needs to acheive this..there is an almighty chance of getting into the top 4 and staying there, and making shitload of money, and seriously improving..but this is probably our last chance next season, since we cant let another glorious opportunity to slip us by again...we need a major trophy and 4th...realistic? prolly not, but 1 out of 2 is, and I know which I'd pick.

I think the season was a huge success. Honestly I don't think that we're near the top four. On the other hand I'm not convinced we're far superior to all the others. I think that there will be stiff competition next season. Don't forget the lousy season Spurs had. Spurs alongside Newcastle have the financial means to beat us to the fourth place.

Look at their squads and still we'd be glad to have many of their players.

Blackburn disappointed me I expected them to mount a serious challenge for fourth place.

Villa came as surprise to me, and I still bite my lips for not getting Young into a blue shirt.

As someone said, we're not perfect and still there is a great path to tread. The squad isn't that deep. And the fact that we rely on players like Carsley worries me. Sure he's a determined player with lots of commitment, but he's nowhere near to be a class act.

Just like we lack depth in defence.

I expect a lot from the kids upfront. Vaughan must leave injuries behind if he is to fulfill the hopes of all evertonians. Anichebe will come good but he'll need more football time.

Ironically I find AJ to be the weakest link upfront. I expected a goal prowess he hasn't been able to show. Probably it has something to do with the lack of creative spark in the midfield.

Yak had a good season, but I expect him to improve his goalscoring rates next term.

For next season, I'd be glad to get in two wide players for the midfield, a good center back (don't know if Gardner can fill the gap) and a great midfielder.

to some degree, yes, but in our club unless youve had your head in the sand stability is a success.

I agree.

I dont think so. If you look at our rate of progress, we need to get into the group stage at least, and make Europe again next year. We are always in it to win it, but realistically winning our group was wat we did and anything above it was a bonus.

We attempted to stay in 4th, but the little girls who play for us, where over emotional, they went on a binge of loosing matches, that put paid to 4th..injuries aside..you cant use that as a valid excuse, we had the players..even moyes admitted this himself. We had what players? Looks like we were threadbare with no options at this point in the season. Injuries to key players? No thats not a good excuse. We should have probably thrown a few 20 million pound players at the problem at that point of the season in hindsight. We had two binges of winning matches earlier on in the season, and we arent quite Man u or chelski yet mate. The bubble burst later, and shorter than any other time in the last few years.

City? Arsenal? Surely your having a chuckle to yourself as you bang that in on your keyboard? You mean the city that just got done 8-1? The city that were going well until their season spectacularily imploded with the loss of key players? Michael Johnson comes to mind? Or the Arsenal that were the bees knees until they followed a similar decline following the loss of Eduardo? The Arsenal that have won the Premier league and have gone on season long unbeaten runs? WTF are you talking bout? Ironic that wed be 5 points ahead of Villa and 10 behind Liverpool? Ironic?

Next season: moyes needs putting under pressure, we need more points against the top 4, similary the board must be put under pressure to cough up the money moyes needs to acheive this..there is an almighty chance of getting into the top 4 and staying there, and making shitload of money, and seriously improving..but this is probably our last chance next season, since we cant let another glorious opportunity to slip us by again...we need a major trophy and 4th...realistic? prolly not, but 1 out of 2 is, and I know which I'd pick.

Mate, you are so wrong here, apart from the more funds thing which is a total gimme. Put Moyes under pressure. Yes. More. Watch him writhe with the pressure. Probably our last chance at anything? Mate these guys are young, hungry and WANT and BELIEVE they BELONG in Europe.

Every single year we have gotten better, stronger, faster and hungrier. Team spirit is through the roof. The balance of our play depends on the available roster. The better we get the sexier our football is. As in evidence by some of the goals weve scored this term. Moyes is a supersmart manager. He's fostering weapons and adding upgrades every year. The club is on a learning curve, believe it or not. He's stripped it back to basics and rebuilt us from scratch. He's learnt himself, and every stage weve taken from, learned and moved forward.

If you think weve achieved anything yet just wait for the heartbreaking final defeat awaiting us, and this will galvanise the club to greater things.

Only the scars from Battle and the heavy experience of loss will make us ready for the next phase of success.

Cheer up 1985, your standards are too high just yet.

My thoughts about the 07/08 season.

League: A fifth position is great. Couldn't ask for more really, even though it looked even better until the African Nations Cup when we lost some stamina and got some injuries on our important players.

We have a 19-8-11 result in the league. While it looks a large number of losses (and it is) 7 of those came against the top 4, we only managed to take 1 point of the top 4 teams. But if we reverse the eyes and look in the other direction... if we remove those games we have a 19-7-4 result against the rest of the teams... 64 points taken in 30 games is very good. We only lost to Villa, Newcastle and shamefully enough... Reading & Fulham. But each team in the league will have their low periods and we had ours as well... and still we got this great result. While the other teams beat eachother...we managed to loose just 4 of those other games... and only 2 against our competitors for UEFA and Intertoto.

If we add the fact that we didn't get one gamedeciding penalty awarded to us the whole season, and just one in total when our position in the league was next to safe... it looks even better and more impressive.

Domestic Cups:

The League cup was a great run.. A semifinal where we lost against Chelsea in two very good games isn't something to be ashamed of.. sure we had some luck with the draw up to that point, but still... a great feeling to see that we can reach that far.

The FA-Cup however was a disgrace.. but perhaps also a blessing in disguise. When we bowed out there we were still participating in Europe, we had the semifinal against Chelsea coming up and we were fighting for a champions league spot. We saw in the end of the season that we lost pace and focus due to the large number of games our top players had to play... if they had to play even more games we MIGHT have lost pace earlier and gotten into more trouble in the league.

Europe:

A great experience and a very good result. I said early in the season that I'd be happy if we survived the groupstage... we flew through it as one of the few teams to take full pot in the 4 games there and without slowing down we obliterated Brann in the next round, and over the two games against Fiorentina we were, by far, the better team. Even their Goalie said after the second match that he wished the game to end quickly when we scored our second goal. No objective viewer of those games can say that we weren't the better team.. too bad to loose out on penalties. But we did show our worth.. and we have beaten one of the finalists. We beat Zenit with 1-0 in the groupstage.

All in all I'd say this season was a very good season for Everton. We placed another stone to continue to build on. Our consistency domesticly have shown that we are a team that are worthy of being the Best of the Rest... and if we can continue to improve a notch or two and get a decent call from the referees.. I can't see four spot being that improbable in the near future. I hope that soon they will stop talk about the big four, and instead speak about the big five, with Everton being the new team in the group. And why not? We showed this season that we have the first lineup to do it, we even have a good first 16. And, with a few exceptions, good or decent backup for all positions.

Some, yea - but I honestly prefer reading what others have to say. I'm still learning more about the beautiful game and the team in general, so lurking suits me fine.

Good post eponymous - I agree with much of what you say.

What has stuck with me about this season was less about the results and more to do with the style.

It had been irking me for a while that we tended to win a lot of games 1-0 and play in a style that was based on working harder than other teams. Quite effective and even understandable after the dross we've watched over the years. But it simply wasn't what I'd been bought up on - not the Everton way.

When this season began, I was expecting more of the same. I was right to think so up the second half in the Ukraine. Something seemed to happen in the players heads and we began to stroke it around.

From there - at least for a while when we built up our unbeaten run after the Clattenburg derby - we played something like I want as an Evertonian. Confident in possession, searching for angles and passes and ruthless in front of goal. OK, we fell away at the end of the season. I'm hoping that DM will have learned a lot from that. Remember, he's never been in this position before - he's learning like the players.

When I look back at what I feared back in August, this has been a major step forward. We played at such a level that I expected us to win just about all our games (sky 4 excepted) and was disappointed if we didn't. That's a real contrast to last season.

The next step is for us to overcome the lack of confidence the players have against the top group. As I've said elsewhere on this site, I believe that DM himself lacks real confidence against these sides and transmits that to the players so that they don't play without fear. That's got to change - as it did briefly against Fiorentina. La Viola have just clinched their place in the CL and could give a game to Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea and we overpowered them with good football. A painful lesson about playing away in Europe - let's hope they remember it next season.

Thank you David Moyes for giving me back pride and believe in the team that I love. I'm a happy blue - but I'll be even happier if we can make some scoops in the transfer market this summer.

If you offered me 5th at the start of the season i'd have said thank you very much. The uefa cup was great but in the end dissapointing to go out to a team worse than us, but one bad game in a cup competion and thats how it goes im afraid.
Looking at the squad weve got weve done very well. We're not top 4 just yet but look closer than we did before, even when we finished 4th. All any team can do is be consistant with the players they have. Something most teams just cant do and thats why we came 5th instead of villa, spurs, city etc. It all bodes well if we can continue to improve the first team, put us on a level playing field, player wise and we'll finish higher than liverpool no danger.
Next season if were happy with who we've brought in and that means at least 4 quality players, I reckon 3rd is achievable.
On the downside though having said all that, the quality of the football isnt good enough due to players we have. Their effective yes, but we've only seen glimpses this season of great passing play. We need to see performances like the newcastle game week in week out.
I think Moyes is great but i wonder if we'll ever see it with him as manager! I hope so

Pretty much agree with your post mate.

I have no problem's with the current defence, i think it's rock solid but we could do with a couple of young player's with potential just to fill in if need's be, although Richard Dunne would be a welcome addition to the squad.

Ideally a striker (OWEN!) would come in and 2 centre midfielder's to replace Gravesen and maybe Carsley, maybe 2 CM squad player's or 2 CM's that will command a starting place?

Although we have got a solid team with work rate and ability, we still need that extra touch of class.

Also a winger with pace and end product (not like Lennon who is quick but has no end product).

30 million will do it for me.

Great time's to be a blue.
