I was in the RAF at the time, flying the VC10 out of RAF Brize Norton near Oxford. On the morning of the match I had just returned from Washington, DC and grabbed a few hours sleep before setting off, without a ticket, to the Lane.
Needless to say it was a total sell out and I spent the game cheering on the lads from outside the ground in the company of what seemed like a thousand Evertonians.
Then it was time to get back to Brize Norton and catch up on a lot of lost sleep.
