Let's face it: a top half of the table finish that goes hand in hand with a lengthy cup run is going to be satisfactory.

There's no chance of the CL spots even in our best season; the EL spots are a danger to our following season.

Just go for broke in the cups and maintain a creditable top half position. Job done until we get our takeover...IF we ever get our takeover.
Exceeeeept what happens if we win a cup, Dave?

Let's go through the ten results, eh? You can only judge game by game in my opinion. Not all 10 fixtures are equal!

Good results
Chelsea (H), 3-1, excellent win.
Southampton (A) 3-0, great win.
West Brom (A), 2-3, not a great performance but a great comeback and a good result.
Spurs (A), 0-0, they were the better side and we were away from home, so a good point.

Okay results
Swansea (A), 0-0, should have won, not a bad result but not a good one given the performance.
Liverpool (H), 1-1, same story here really.

Not so great results
Watford (H), 2-2, disappointing as they scored with pretty much their only shots. Should have done better.
Man City (A), 0-2, could have been different and we were in the game but no shame at all in losing.
Arsenal (A), 1-2, generally good performance, just a minute of Howard being awful. Bad result but not awful.

Poor results
Man United (H), 0-3, shocking performance. They're good but still a bad result and an atrocious performance.

You can argue all losses are awful results but given some context we've done okay. A few really good results, just need to turn some draws into wins and cut out individual mistakes/our awful keeper. They key thing now is to capitalise on our easier fixtures and chain some wins together.

Look at the teams we've played, apart from Watford and west Bromley the rest were all contenders for the top 8, and in fairness we've played good in the majority of games.

The test comes now, can we put the lower teams to bed. If we win 4 out 4 the outlook will be different

We win a cup and we get a lot of profile and publicity and it'd make the ownership issue become too great to sit on.

Really?

Sadly unless that "cup" is the Champions League I don't think anyone outside of the victorious club is arsed.

Maybe, although drifting downwards in the league costs big bucks that a cup can't match. And the strategy didn't work for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Birmngham or Wigan.

60 points and a decent (SF/Final) cup run. They'd be the targets I'd set this season.

The more important work is being carried out during this season in terms of getting players like Galloway and Browning cemented and confirmed as first teamers and introducing players like Pennington, Ledson, Holgate and Rodriguez to the first team set up in the second half of the season in bits and pieces of games (just as he did last season with Galloway and Browning). Bedding in Funes Mori and Cleverley and whoever we may get in January will also be important tasks between now and May.

That'd be good progress as an organisation.

We are nicely on course for that.

You cant compare those duffers with Everton.
There aren't any cup winners I can compare with Everton. They're the only non-billionaire clubs to have won a cup in recent times, and all of them have fallen way off since winning the cup. I don't think there's any reason winning a cup would make us any worse, but there's no reason to think it's going to lead to an Everton renaissance, either.

A cup win would be fantastic, but a lot of clubs have suffered badly from prioritizing the cup over the league.

We are a club of massive potential, those others had and have no potential. A cup win for us would be a launchpad.
