‘Taking the knee’ again…..

Not sure it makes any difference apart from highlighting the issue. You often hear calls to educate racists. I can’t see how that would make a significant impact either as in my view a racist will not change. I believe we are stuck with it unfortunately

It isn't meant to be anything more than that. An action like this has a sole purpose, to get people talking about it. It is not meant to be a solution but a tool to highlight that the issue is still around and there is still work to do. I would also say education is massively important, you won't get through to them all but a few may consider their actions and ideology a bit more.

Any alternative would be for the exact same reasons and have the same critique. Nobody thinks that by simply seeing somebody kneel they will see the error of their ways, but it does open up a discussion, like it has here. And that is just with the thought of doing it again. Whether it be special kits with messaging, advertising hoardings showing logos and messaging, announcers with specific scripts before and/or during the game. It is all the same end game, get people talking about it and not brushing it under the carpet.

We may be stuck with it but to think like that enables the racists to be more vocal, to be more brave. This is how Reform get in, this is how Tommy Tit twenty names becomes popular. The more we are vocal against racial abuse the more it will push the racists down the social ladder. There will be some that can be educated, and there are plenty of ex-skinheads, etc. to account for this.

Basically to give up and stop highlighting and/or stop caring about educating them and trying to get rid of/limit racism we are giving them power.

Society has just got loads worse in the last year or so, this will probably just fuel it more

My gf got racially abused when I was with her in a pub at 6pm the other month, they weren't even shouting at her or anything. It was literally just said to her like it was a normal conversation, it's insane

If it's the one you told previous, you handled it perfect to the point where the imbecile apologised. When you know someone and they know you AND you both have an understanding for one another's borders re sense of humour you can push here n there. But straight out of the traps insulting strangers isn't going to go well. If it's the fool that eventually said sorry, at least he did. You kept your dignity and fronted him out, you also spectacularly made the boss very pleased with you.
There's a world of knobheads out there that would have doubled down and become more insulting and nasty in the name of 'seeking a laugh'.

We're in a crucible of toxicity, cost of living has a lot of people pished off, covid fallout, nasty social media, and a political class hellbent on division and racial bigotry. It's got so bad it's now the go to banner headline more days than not on the news.

I'm glad I'm old enough to remember a time when it wasn't like this, but it's sad that that time seems as distant as it is and quite frankly unattainable now. Tired.
