sunderland

Sunderland ( ) is a port city and metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear, England. It is a port at the mouth of the River Wear on the North Sea, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is the most populous settlement in the Wearside conurbation and the second-most populous settlement in North East England, after Newcastle.
The centre of the modern city is an amalgamation of three settlements founded in the Anglo-Saxon era: Monkwearmouth, on the north bank of the Wear, and Sunderland and Bishopwearmouth on the south bank. Monkwearmouth contains St Peter's Church, which was founded in 674 and formed part of Monkwearmouth–Jarrow Abbey, a significant centre of learning in the seventh and eighth centuries. Sunderland was a fishing settlement and later a port, being granted a town charter in 1179. The city traded in coal and salt, also developing shipbuilding industry in the fourteenth century and glassmaking industry in the seventeenth century.
Sunderland was once known as 'the largest shipbuilding town in the world' and once made a quarter of all of the world's ships from its yards. Following the decline of its traditional industries in the late 20th century, the area became an automotive building centre. In 1992, the borough of Sunderland was granted city status. Sunderland is historically part of County Durham, being incorporated to the ceremonial county of Tyne and Wear in 1974.
Locals are sometimes known as Mackems, a term which came into common use in the 1970s. Its use and acceptance by residents, particularly among the older generations, is not universal. The term is also applied to the Sunderland dialect, which shares similarities with the other North-East England dialects.

Who should be starting keeper vs. Sunderland

Should be Joel imo. Howard's been so poor that surely you have to give your back up a go. And he was fantastic tonight, made some class saves and kept us in it.

Everton vs Sunderland - Sat 9 May 12:45

Meh. Everton. Weekdays. Everton. Meh. Monday. Against that backdrop to a drab end of a drab season it’s a good indicator of the level of effort that’s gone into yet another dull preview. There’s a certain lethargy around the place, invoked by playing utter pony against a limited Aston Villa...

You know what you’re here for. Everton. Or maybe that’s a cheap excuse? Maybe it’s a convenient pass for you to get some time out of the house, with your mates, in some seriously dull town somewhere in England? Or to escape down the pub and watch it? Or to spend some time with your lad who...

Who's likely going to Sunderland (A) on 9th Nov?

I'm going to try and get some tickets sorted and pop along with a few mates. Obviously it's down the road for me and it would be a shame not to get along. A guy who lives down the road from me supports the Toffees too, so I've proposed the idea and he seems pretty interested. I'd like to meet a...

We need to have a chat about Everton, you and I, and some time soon ok? Having no money so signing our players on loan? A disgrace. Even if Roberto had a dream or not, doesn’t matter. Bang on that Everton. Did you pass them the script? Then why didn’t they meekly move aside and let Arsenal do...

    Ki Sung Yueng (Sunderland)

Hi guys! This is my first post on your forums. Sunderland looks like it's getting relegated so Ki won't be staying there next year and I don't think he wants to go back to Swansea after how he was treated there. I know that previously Roberto Martinez has tried to buy him when he was at Wigan...
