Everton Youth Teams Thread

Your arguments ridiculous. You are arguing it's better to have nothing than literally anything. For someone that actually does spend time in the youth team thread it's a bit of a mystery why you bother if you actually think there's no point to any of them being there ahead of no one. It's a bit odd to say Campbell, Welch and King are fair to pick as needs must and then draw the line at objectively better players than them. If youre saying they wouldn't play anyway so what's the point then fine, but we might as well have named a 4 man bench in that case because them 3 and Aznou wouldn't get a game and aren't ready either.

Graham might not be PL ready, he may not even be championship ready but he's certainly better than an empty seat on the bench. Tamen may one day have a future here, he's arguably better than them 2 on the bench already, it's better for him to sit on the bench than Welch or Campbell.

Olayiwola or Foster aren't ready but at least you could give them a go on the bench for the sake of it than nothing just for match day experience.
Yeah a couple of weeks ago I was saying I had no issue with 2 keepers etc on the bench ahead of someone like Graham because we were still putting out a balanced bench and there was no scenario you could envisage where that player would ever get near the pitch. Today was a bit different. Only naming 8 subs including 2 keepers and 4 defenders is daft. If we’d been 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go a natural attacking player would be a much better bet than throwing on Patterson etc. You don’t actually have to be ‘ready’ in those instances, PL history is littered with players who ultimately weren’t good enough for this level but had their moment in the sun in those situations.

I think it was Dyche who said he wouldn’t put a kid on the bench who was nowhere near ready as it raises expectations and perhaps does more bad than good.
I could be wrong

….i’m surprised Welch and Campbell are still at the club and I’d be even more surprised if they’re still here next season. It makes no sense to me that they’re on the bench when there are simply better options. I’d have Billy Tamen ahead of both in the pecking order plus he’s got the physicality to cope.

You’re selecting substitutes with a view to managing game situations. You’re right, the game situation yesterday called for the introduction of Patterson when Dibling left the field with cramp. If we were a goal down and chasing the game with somebody like Graham on the bench, then for me Patterson is a less obvious option.

I might still go with Patterson but I’d have to think about it. Graham might be 9st dripping wet but he was playing ‘men’s football’ in Ireland at 16. He’s instinctive in the box, he’s sharp and creative in the top third so could make something happen.

I do think the inclusion also gives them such a boost and great experience being around senior pro’s in a match day squad. Can’t see much of a downside to including youngsters with a possible future at the club, especially when they are superior to others that are selected.
Moyes looks at birth certificates when it comes to the bench and first 11
McNeil was going to start on Saturday over Dibling , if Grealish was fit. When he wasn’t very good the previous game

….weird how Moyes gave PL debuts to 13 teenagers in his first spell.

Indeed, if Moyes looks at birth certificates he’ll know that 3 of the 5 youngest PL debutants in our history were given their first games by him, 2 of them went on to become full England internationals.

It is a puzzle, though, why Welch and Campbell continue to appear on the bench, I know there is a view it’s because of their physicality. At least Campbell had a full season playing in the competitive SPL but Welch has struggled on loan.

Well he had Rooney who’s one of the greatest talents to ever come through an academy in England. How many others kicked on and were regulars under Moyes ?

Back then Moyes had a smaller squad than he has now, so any injuries and you’re forced to have them on the bench and start, so I’m not having Moyes is fantastic at bringing kids through

Wasn't some of them basically forced because of injuries?
I'm sure some of these were a debut. A meaningless game at a freezing Goodison.

Yes mate, happened a lot back then. Maybe @Eggs can tell us which other youngsters out of them 13 kicked on under Moyes and became regulars

….off the top of my head, I’d think he gave debuts to Coleman and Osman, probably over 700 games for us. Of course, some left for decent money early in their career, such as Rooney and Rodwell but I suppose you could count Barkley. All went on to become full internationals. I think his last signing may have been John Stones.

Of course very few come through but Moyes gave plenty a chance.

Coleman was bought from Ireland and Moyes sure took his time before letting him play. Osman was 23 when he debuted, had been on several loans before that. And even then he played right wing and he really only established himself in 06-07 when he was 25.
