Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

It proves the opposite.

That if Merlin Rohl fell though we had a back up.
Rohl said we had been tracking him for over 12 months.

That will be the same for any players we sign next Summer, we will already be tracking them.

Im sure people think we wake up 1 day and just bid for a player.

The reality is that we probably have hundreds on our radar at any 1 time and in some cases will be laying the groundwork with players, agents and clubs many, many months in advance.

I've been saying constantly these deals take ages and ages and you don't just sign 20m players you only found out about the day before. I suspect this lad knew he was coming to us for some time

Hoping based on his age alone we have made the better purchase. Think Moyes was keen on bringing in another leader.
If you’re the manager of a PL club you live and die by the next 6 games and you want the one who you are more certain can make an immediate impact, he knows Soucek and he’s proven in the PL.

If you’re the recruitment team you might have a longer term view around capacity to improve and increase in value and also Rohl’s wage demands are probably less.

That would make sense. He does love Soucek as well. Like loads. And of course we can sell Rohl on at some stage. The complicated world of football transfers. The biggest deal I was ever involved in was about 5m and although not football related took about 9 months to sort.

It's why the manager should not have final say on transfers, the power of veto yes, they shouldn't be stuck with a player they don't want, but they shouldn't be allowed to push through a deal that is less useful to the club in the medium term. For example, Soucek is 7 years older and on twice the wage of Rohl for, presumably, a similar fee. One player would be a one contract wonder with no resale value, the other could be here for 10 years or could be sold for a profit or at least a fee in the future. The right decision was made.

Can’t disagree with that

I agree.

I don’t understand those who think the manager watches Futbol Mundial one night and go “yes we’ll go for him” as if there’s no scouting department.

There are many deals that are all but agreed months in advance, too: clubs track, they look at the data, they speak to intermediaries.

It's only the final price and terms that are agreed near the end, and that's because it will rely on players leaving. It's like buying a house in a chain.
