I think the vision is for KDH to play further back when possible. Like when Gana goes to AFCON, I see a midfield of KDH, Jimmy G and then one of Röhl or Alcaraz in the 10 spot. Then next season, Gana becomes the backup. It’s nice to start seeing different options finally.

He now thinks he's a boss scout that knows a player. To be fair to him he did think one of the scab six would snap him up.

Hopefully can take Gana’s position when he goes to Afcon next to Garner.

We need more pace height and power in the deep midfield and hopefully he’ll provide all of that.

I was in Nova Scotia a couple of weeks ago and went to a Halifax Wanderers game and the stadium hype man was Dominik Diamond of Gamesmaster fame. It was very odd.

I’m made up that we signed another midfielder. It’s been a weak spot on this team for several years. Gana has papered over some cracks for much too long, but we just have to get better on the ball in the middle of the field to control the game. KDH and hopefully Merlin can help bring that.

I know people really wanted a strict holding midfielder, and I agreed, but this is a much more forward thinking move. A midfielder who can play both ways and do a bit of everything is a rarer thing, and Merlin looks like he could potentially be that. A specialist #6 or a like for like Gana understudy would have been the easy move, but this has the potential to be a lot smarter, especially for the cost.

I think we as fans get a bit too caught up in specific positions, and while we don’t want players playing out of position, having complete players with some versatility is much better if you can manage it. We’ll see if Merlin proves to be that, but I really like the look of him from brief highlights!

Secondly, its how he adapts to the premier league because he looks like the type who thinks he can 'bully' players with his height and strength so he may get a surprise.

Thirdly he will need to develop into an all rounder to win a place in the team long term. I wonder if the lengthly injury layoffs may have hampered him and may continue to hamper his development.

Happy about this - I had DM as a priority ahead of RB in the end - he doesn't quite fill that but perhaps he helps that midfield when Gana is out.
