2025/26 David Moyes

The more progressive managers at Bournemouth & Brighton are using 5 subs every game as we found to our cost against Bournemouth last year & Wolves being inches away from salvaging a draw yesterday. Moyes has a good enough bench now & needs to start using it.
What’s “progressive” about chucking on five subs? It’s abuse of a ridiculous rule and shows you probably can’t pick a good first 11.

I definitely agree that we need to make more of the 5 sub rule

Even if just to get younger players some more minutes

If only I’d said I don’t know who would have come if asked 🤦🏻‍♂️

Well aware that you did. Just confirming that (IMO, obviously) none of them would have.

Small chance we could maybe get Iraola NOW, if the job was open, but absolutely no chance in Jan.

EDIT: Actually, almost certainly still no chance of Iraola. Not because he would rather stay at Bournemouth, but because he’ll have his eye on a CL club for next move

Odd comment .
It’s most definitely a squad game now , and utilising the subs bench to the full is the skill of management.
We saw ourselves saw a glaring example of how it can be utilised when a manager used his subs to recover from 2-0 down while our then manager did nothing.
C’mon, ‘abuse ‘ of a rule ? Really ?
It’s there to be managed to your advantage, ignoring it is negligent.

Just because it is the rule now it doesn’t make it correct. They should go back to three subs max with an emergency concussion sub. They only brought in five subs during Covid and we are no longer in a pandemic.

They have ruined the balance of the sport by allowing a basketball esque dynamic.

And if anyone is found to be abusing the concussion rule there should be points deductions.

Hell, I’d argue you could go back to two substitutions with one concussion sub.

Not sure tbh, don’t know how ambitious the new owners are or who would have come, but I’d have Irola, Frank or Emery over Moyes.
Frank’s best Premier League finish is 9th and Iraola’s is 12th. Why would they be better appointments? Emery of course has done well, but why would he leave Villa?

We haven't had the players to fill a bench in years. It's a rule that only helped those with a big enough squads. Luckily we're seemingly able to finally have a few to come on. We won the game yesterday.... Try to enjoy it, plenty of time to moan when we loose again.

People bum up Iraola, but at the same age Moyes had already finished fourth in the Premier League.
