Transfer Rumour Tomas Soucek

What is so dispiriting about this link is that Moyes has been talking about signing players who are good in possession.
This has given me some hope that he understands that the low possession, reactive football that has been his go to style is increasingly difficult to auger success.
Most of the signings suggested that a better iteration of Moyes had arrived.
But Soucek neatly encapsulates all that I have always disliked in the manager.
A player who is resolute and dogged in defence and capable of getting the odd goal against the run of play.
But also a player who is very poor in possession and too slow in progressing the ball . A player who frequently resorts to the hit and hope high balls for our forwards to tire themselves out chasing , running the channels.
He is a quintessential Moyes player.
9 goals last season (7 the previous season) is hardly the odd goal against the run of play. He would’ve been our top scorer in the league and outscored our entire midfield in all comps by 4.

He doesn’t get dispossessed much (87th percentile compared to midfielders in top 5 leagues). His passing is similar completion %age to Garner.

He attempts less long passes per 90 than both Gana and Garner

He is a DM and you are complaining that he is resolute and dogged in defending?

Yeh sure is. Someone who is going to emulate Moyes mindset on the pitch. Along with Grealish and Dibbling this would be a very good and balanced midfield transfer window.
Ye i mean im happy people are coming in as we are still short , but if no striker , rb and cdm come in we will be dangerously close to wire especially once the Africa cup is here in a few months.

We need pace too .

Im not sold on soucek, certainly not at the jarg rumoured fees we are seeing from footballinsider.

However, we have talked about needing more goals from midfield for years. Now people downplaying souceks goals as “the odd goal against the run of play”.

Our entire midfields league goals over last 2 seasons (Doucoure, gana, garner, Tim, Mangala, Gomes, Onana) - 19

Souceks league goals over last 2 seasons - 16

Not for me I’m afraid.
His signing would potentially negate much of the good work we have done in this window.
Especially if he becomes a starter.
His limitations in possession could reduce the time our more creative players have the ball.
While he defends well his inability to progress the ball means we have to have a player in close attendance to receive the ball from him. Anytime the opposition can isolate him his only recourse is to launch a long and aimless ball up top.
His presence encourages low possession backs to the wall football.
