Transfer Rumour Tomas Soucek

9 goals last season (7 the previous season) is hardly the odd goal against the run of play. He would’ve been our top scorer in the league and outscored our entire midfield in all comps by 4.

He doesn’t get dispossessed much (87th percentile compared to midfielders in top 5 leagues). His passing is similar completion %age to Garner.

He attempts less long passes per 90 than both Gana and Garner

He is a DM and you are complaining that he is resolute and dogged in defending?
I would prefer a DM with more technical ability , being a DM and being able to progress the ball are not mutually exclusive.

Im not sold on soucek, certainly not at the jarg rumoured fees we are seeing from footballinsider.

However, we have talked about needing more goals from midfield for years. Now people downplaying souceks goals as “the odd goal against the run of play”.

Our entire midfields league goals over last 2 seasons (Doucoure, gana, garner, Tim, Mangala, Gomes, Onana) - 19

Souceks league goals over last 2 seasons - 16
The problem with comparing our recent goals output with Souceks is that we have been a notoriously low scoring side for two seasons at least .
We need goals from midfield for certain, but we also need midfielders who create goal scoring chances.
Soucek is not someone who will help us create opportunities.
Parodying it slightly for emphasis, it is no good Soucek scoring 1 goal in a 5- 1 defeat .
Soucek adds to defence but detracts from offence.

West Ham only scored 4 more than us last season.

Not really sure what you are parodying for emphasis as his goals are important goals, not just consolations or irrelevant goals against the run of play.

4 of his 9 goals came in draws or wins by 1 goal.
4 of his goals were opening goals in 2 nil wins.

You don’t like him or think he is good enough clearly and that’s fine. But if you are going to try and put false reasoning to it, it’s fairly easy checked.

Ultimately he is a midfielder whose passing is poor, can’t control the ball, can’t dribble and who is slow and limited in possession.
But he works hard , wins headers , and scores goals .
He is a glorified CB really.
I expect more from a midfielder.

Sounds like perfect Moyes player…

People are putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5...not convinced we are after him. Noises that we have in fact enquired about paqueta...not convinced either, but more plausible with moyes approach to get the best players available.

Statistically, that’s not the case though.

His pass completion is similar to Garner (who people talk about being one of our better passers).
He is in the 85th percentile for miscontrols and 83rd for dispossessed (against all midfielders in top 5 leagues). So his touch is good and he retains the ball.

Yeah, he might be slower, but as a DM, he makes a lot of blocks and as you said, is solid defensively (so positionally must be allright).

If we get an attacking RB, a solid DM that will shield the defence and cover when they get forward (as Barry was so good at doing) is really important. We have no DM or anyone really designed for it. I’m not expecting any real DM to be a dribbler, as I wouldn’t want them to. They have a much more specific job.

Sounds like you want a CM, and that’s fine, but we still need that person that will sit when others go up. Garner did it a bit vs Mansfield but he isn’t a DM.

I think piecing together a possible narrative from the rumours that have appeared over the window , Moyes approached Soucek earlier in the window but Soucek ( who is happily settled and liked by W. Ham supporters) was reluctant to move and was prepared to stay and fight for his place.
Recently however they have signed players more aligned with Potter’s style and Soucek has become more receptive to a move .
Hence what is possibly our second approach , this time though the player wants the move.
Soucek and Moyes looked to be having a proper chat after the friendly in the US of A. When I saw that I had an inkling we might be in for him at some point
