Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

To put it into context - Sunderland this summer have signed Diarra 25m, Adingra - 20m, Xhaka - free, Sadiki - 14m, and Alderete -8m.

All of those would be squad players minimum and upgrades over our bench - several of them would be starters and better than what we have.

That's good recruitment and for Sunderland yes maybe they overpaid on Diarra to get him in quickly and maybe overpaid Xhaka in wages to get him over the line.

Recruitment is about knowing your level and buying at the top of that, seems like we have either over estimated our pull and wasted time and effort on players really had no interest, or if we don't get Dibling then again we've tried too high a level in money we are willing to spend.

Both are signs of very bad recruitment

Based on yesterday, they've got a bargain. Further emphasising your point, of course.

Would you mind quoting where I have written that KDH & Grealish are not good players?

Because I've never disputed this.

I've also never said i'm "against" either or both of these players.

What I have said multiple times is that both Grealish & KDH are players signed to improve 2 of the teams strongest positions.

Meanwhile the weakest 2 areas of the team at RB & RW along with a DM simply dont have any natural players for those roles.

Could you perhaps highlight a successful club that has 2-3 players out of position over multiple seasons and chooses, yes chooses not to strengthen these positions? Instead strengthens their strongest two areas.

Because you wont find that online.

On the day we signed Alcaraz, if we had quickly followed that up by signing Grealish and KDH level players at RB & RW I suspect we'd all be excited for the new season and praising the transfer business.

Weve signed a good player and loaned a potentially exceptional one...in the wrong positions.

I can't fathom how anyone would have looked at the window after signing Alcaraz and thought;

"I hope we sign a 10 and a left sided 8"

Not a single person would have said that. Its simply bewildering people not only accept but are applauding the glaring mess on the right.
Grealish and KDH have been bought to improve our attacking output through goals, assists and creativity, which both will. It’s not as linear as adding a RW and suddenly scoring more goals, we need a decent makeover in how we attack and they contribute to that. Team game and all that

1: In not sure how its contrarian to highlight Juventus and Flamengo as teams that play "tippy tappy" football and have still seen Alcaraz' quality.

They signed him and then their play didnt align with Alcaraz' penchant for excellence on the quick transition, a way that neither of those teams play as Douglas Luiz has also found at Juventus.

2: Ive never once said that Moyes is negotiating for players. Its clear hes the one putting names forward.

Which other buffoon is seeking to strengthen the strongest areas of the team rather than the weaker positions?

Can you imagine leading a team and upgrading your strongest 2 teammates before swapping out your weakest 2? Its illogical isnt it?

I firmly believe hes given unrealistic names to the other 2 chaps. When one of those names is John McGinn it seems quite clear that hes calling the shots on his 2 year contract.

3: Perhaps you could point to where you first thought KDH would be an upgrade on Alcaraz in the 10 position?

Hes played 23 games there and scored 5 goals.

4 were at Chelsea where he scored 1 goal

16 were for Leicester in the championship where he scored 4 goals.

He's a left sided central midfielder. The same position as Gana.

Is he currently better than Alcaraz as a 10? Absolutely no chance.

Is he better than Gana as a left sided 8? Absolutely no chance.

Happy to dispute both points.

You could, but that would be 1 position on one side and not both RB & RW.

I think that is "unprecedented".

Perhaps we'll see Moyes praised in future for creating his own system where we dont use a right hand side :o

Wouldnt that be something...

I remember you mentioning Kvaratskhelia before he moved to Napoli.

£15mil we could have had him for. There are players out there, even the chap who went to Napoli and then Bayern, Kim Min Jae who we were linked with.

Sliding doors moments. There will be, and im sure there are similar players we could have brought in this window.

But i dont believe they are being put forward by Moyes and i dont believe the work has been done.
You can’t say we panicked with Grealish. He’s been linked all Summer as a main target

You are still banging on about a left sided centre mid - there’s no such thing when you play 2 in midfield.

You’re making much too big a deal of it. Your centre mid pairing should cover the whole of the middle of the park. They can easily interchange.

The difference you have usually is a defensive centre mid and a box to box or more attacking. Never heard of Keane or Scholes described as a left sided centre mid

You are right on Thelwell though. Should have ensured he stayed.

Fofana says if theres a good opportunity he will go but hes more than happy to stay. Things can change but hes constantly given the message hes not at all interested in Everton since our interest was known. Couldnt be more disinterested from what he is quoted to say.

Moyes and the recruitment team are just going to have to readjust their expectations of quality they want. We can still improve the team in any position. I find it a bit weird that we often say there is a whole world of footballers out there, and then say we are running out of targets. Maybe they need to adjust their PL experience criteria (if there is one).

Progression in terms of quality of player brought in will need to be a little more incremental ….I do wonder if Moyes is trying to fast tack improved quality of players in given he only has two years left.

This fact seems utterly lost on some. A RW alone isnt going to suddenly transform us and a certain poster even claimed the other day that he would've swerved Grealish if it meant having one in before Leeds.. 💀
