Bobble saying we want a striker
last night I was nestled into the corner of Damson Parkway getting ready to watch Solihull Moors v Everton U21s, when I got a tap on shoulder and heard in a Brummie accent "enjoy Jack, he's my boy, Bobble," - that man was former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor. Just talking with Gabby about Grealish got me excited for match day.
Looking back, it is one of the longest deals I have ever reported on having started in May, but Jack Grealish is through the door - that 'premium loan' the newly formed Everton committee craved. It was an ambitious pursuit, with meetings and groundwork being laid before players had even jetted off on their holidays. The 29-year-old was granted permission to speak to clubs over the summer, with his future deemed surplus to requirements by Pep Guardiola. However, this was a transfer that would be decided by Manchester City's preference of a permanent sale turning into a loan option. Everton were willing to wait and made sure that Grealish was aware they were not going anywhere. David Moyes and Jordan Pickford were two key figures in persuading him that this was the place to re-ignite his form ahead of an England tournament year. It was a bold move by the senior figures at Everton, with the former Aston Villa man joining the club to be the highest paid player on the club's books (with Everton covering over £12 million of his wages through the course of the season). Expensive, but deemed a no brainer by key figures. This was seen as the ultimate premium loan signing, and after a number of months of waiting and Jack Grealish's desire to get a solution sorted before the season kicks off, Everton were given the green light to secure a loan move for the £100 million player. A costly loan deal and a statement signing, but most of all right now... an exciting addition to a squad severely needing more quality in the final third.
Tyler Dibling
At the point of writing this, this is still not dead in the water. The 19 year old has still not trained with the Southampton first team this week. Manager Will Still once again confirmed the player's head is elsewhere in a press conference. The Exeter-born attacker owes a lot to the Saints, having spent the last decade of his life as an Academy prospect (except for a few months in 2022). In 2022 Dibling left their Academy to join Chelsea on a much more lucrative contract. However, he struggled to fit in at the West London club as he suffered a lack of confidence in a different environment. After just two appearances for Chelsea's youth side, talks got underway to bring him back to Southampton over player welfare purposes. Make no mistake, even though the 19-year old owes a lot to his current club, Dibling still wants this move to happen. However, he understands the mechanics behind such a deal to maximise Southampton's earnings on a player deemed to be their best Academy product in over 30 years. Due to his personal decision, and ROOF's influence (Dibling's agency), a transfer request has not been submitted so in the meantime the winger is left waiting to find out where his future lies. Everton are open to negotiating further with the South Coast club and are hoping some movement in the terms and structure could eventually wield an agreement. Talks have taken place again this week, with Everton showing a willingness to creep a little higher on the overall package. But, for now, the 19 year old remains frustrated on not receiving the green light.
Omari Hutchinson
The 21 year old is desperate for a return to Premier League football. Like Tyler Dibling, this is another player who has expressed a desire to depart his current club with the hope of pushing for a move. Ipswich are demanding a fee well in excess of £30 million plus some hefty add-ons and clauses for the former Chelsea man. Everton do have an understanding of the terms to sign Hutchinson but have yet to take this any further, contrary to some reports, with Tyler Dibling still the number one preference.
What To Expect?
Everton are well and truly open for business. Energy has been spent assessing the transfer market for a certain profile of striker - a different number 9 to our current stable. David Moyes would also not be against a more experienced statesman being added to the club's forward options (if the finances were advantageous for the club). Jamie Vardy, who is a free agent, has been offered to various clubs including Everton on several occasions this summer, but still has no takers.
Central midfield is an area deemed important to strengthen before the deadline. Douglas Luiz has admirers internally, but is still looking for a club who play in Europe, whilst an experienced full back is also still on the cards. Everton are monitoring more loan options too.
Outgoings
Stockport County are still (yes still) waiting to finalise a move for Roman Dixon, whilst Harry Tyrer remains strongly liked by a number of Football League clubs.
Youssef Chermiti has failed to impress during pre-season, with Everton now open to a permanent sale or loan option for the 21-year-old. Chermiti's preference is now to play first team football elsewhere rather than being Everton's third option behind Beto and Thierno Barry.
Nathan Patterson, who is now set to return to light training, is another who is attracting interest from clubs. German club Hoffenheim were ready to take the right back on loan, but Everton did not sanction the move due to the lack of squad depth. There is a desire from the Scotland International to play First Team football this season, whether that is at Everton or elsewhere.
Sheffield United have offered Tim Iroegbunam an avenue for first team football with a loan offer but again, Everton are yet to sanction any departures due to the squad depth.
Injuries
Jarrad Branthwaite has suffered a hamstring injury at Finch Farm. The defender is set to be ruled out for a number of weeks.
Vitalli Mykolenko is yet to train this week so far after suffering a groin injury against Roma on Saturday, but the initial outlook is that he has avoided a serious injury and has an outside chance for Monday's game at Elland Road.
Harrison Armstrong, who missed the club's final pre-season fixture, suffered a muscular injury last week which will see him miss around 10 to 14 days of action from point of injury.
Seamus Coleman is being carefully treated with some thigh 'tightness'.
