You give them as much leeway as you want if you think the current squad is anywhere near acceptable.

Maybe we offered him £70k a week at the end of June and he has said he will consider this and other offers, then gone to Disneyland with his family?

Other than the ones we have signed, we have no idea whatsoever who we have spoken to, who we have offered deals to, who has turned us down, and who has said maybe.

He might also have given us a flat no. We don’t want him to be a starter. Why would he leave a club he could have finished his career at as a favourite to sit on our bench when we are supposedly linked with Luiz, Grealish etc.
