The Maitland Niles I saw playing in England wouldn’t improve us other than in the sense he’d beef the squad up. Somebody has posted some interesting stuff which suggests he may have improved over his 2 years at Lyon which would change my opinion, but let’s not make out the lad would be a clear improvement based on his form in this league, he just wouldn’t.

He's improved mate, he also would be a definite upgrade at RB and a solid if not spectacular DM

I'll also point out he did play right back the season O'Brien played at Lyon so obviously know each other quite well

He would be a big improvement. Garner is average and we have a centre half playing right back.

I mean it wouldn’t be ideal to do that just for the sake of it, but I should clarify that me saying ‘I’m not sure what he gives us that we haven’t got’ appears to have been taken the wrong way by a lot of people. I’m not saying he’s awful and would be the worst signing we could possibly make, just that the lad who played for Arsenal, West Brom, Southampton, and by all accounts Roma was not a particularly good player and was very much in the same bracket as the keanes, Harrisons, doucoures and garners of the world who people say they want to move on from. I haven’t seen him at Lyon and @Dwight K Schrute posted some good stuff about his time there which would make me reassess it a bit, but I totally stand by saying if he plays here like he has in the rest of his PL career people will absolutely slate him.

Sounds like your hedging your bets to me. You wanted to slate the signing but you don't want to be called out for it if he's successful.
