Transfer Rumour Douglas Luiz

No, not unless we needed exactly his profile to do a very specific job and that would complete our squad. He wasn't THAT good. Juve paid that and they overpaid.

Don't get me wrong - huge, immediate upgrade over Garner. It's just not smart squad building in the long term and we have to be incredibly smart to get back to where we want to be.
£40m for a proven performer is peanuts mate. It’s not 2010.

Just on the flipside, 4 of those goals were pens, and Juve paid 50m and realised their mistake so quickly they're trying to get their money back after one season.

The question was;

Do you think if his performances at Villa in his last season were replicated with us this season, he'd be worth £40mil?

I'm saying, 20+ goal involvements in that season, and him being a standout player in a team that finished their highest place in 30 years to earn a £50m move - then the answer is without doubt yes.

Even things like;
  • Among Premier League midfielders, only Rodri and Enzo Fernández completed more successful long passes
The lad would instantly be our best centre midfielder since, well.... for a very long time.

If he did start to fade later on in that season, it's perhaps because of 50+ matches in a newer box-to-box role for him.

The question for me is if it takes too much budget away from our priority positions - out wide+pace.

I guess the thing for me is, and this relates to your last point @GrandOldTeam, is that in the age of PSR, 40m for a 28 year old is not peanuts at all. If you spend that on that player on a 3 year deal, you are never seeing another penny of it again, and that then is instantly £40m that you need to find elsewhere in revenue or other player sales. The constraint that adds is huge, and you need a LOT of upside for it to be worth it.

He’s 27. He just turned 27 in May. We could easily waste that on young prospects who never do anything.

He's just turned 27.

You have to balance recruitment.

We can't go signing players like Thierno Barry for every position.

After Pickford and Branthwaite, he'd be the first on the team sheet.

I think we'd struggle to find players, for less who can come in a box-to-box/centre midfield role and perform to a standard immediately.

There's definite comfort in knowing he'd play every game for us, while the likes of Armstrong or Iroegbunam develop too.

He would be sensational next to Gueye. They would be a great foil for one another. He has just turned 27 years old as others have said and he's a central midfielder. Sometimes you have to pay a decent fee to get a proven quality premier league footballer. A certain team paid £75 million for a 27 year old Dutch centre back and that hasn't worked out too badly for them...

I don't see it happening but hopefully it does as he's pretty much the best we can potentially attract at this time and he would significantly improve the starting XI. I think he would be good enough to play for Arsenal or Liverpool and that can't be said for many players in the league outside of the sky six.
