One of the best tacklers in Europe too. His stats are pretty good in this area year after year. I read somewhere that he had 100+ tackles 7 years in a row in Europe, a feat not many have achieved. In my opinion he is underrated not overrated. People want him to be something he isn’t, but what he is very good at is breaking up opposition play and tackling. Vital to the team.
The thing is that it doesn't matter who you pair him with, in the formation we play our midfield won't be competitive with him. You could play him with Rodri or Bruno Fernandes, our midfield wouldn't be top 10 in the league.
It was crazy against Blackburn when Garner pressed from top on the edge of their box and saw Gana next to him when he looked over his shoulder. We had no players between them and our central defenders, while Blackburn had their entire midfield there. A better team would have punished us. Every time.
I wish Gana were more disciplined. When he see a lose ball or a 50/50 he has full tunnel vision and no concerns about the space he leaves behind. He needs a babysitter.
Yes, he does a lot of good things, but as a team we would have benefitted from a Gareth Barry type in front of the defense that had positioning as his main strength. Instead of Gana. Not with him.
As of now, he'll continue to be paired with a player that does a little bit of everything. Nothing wrong with that, but those will never shine playing with Gana. I do think that if we signed Douglas Luiz, that him and Garner together would do a lot better than him and Gana.
Gana shines in matches were we have 40% possession. He is also the main reason why we have 40% possession.
As of now Leeds are favorites to win over us the opening match. I'd love to see an offensive Everton team going to Elland Road to dominate the match and silence the home crowd. I expect to see a team that sit back and have 35% possession. No ambition, but with a hope to steal a point. That's where we're at and that won't change with Gana in the starting 11.
