Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

We’re likely heading into the new season with the same starting 11 as last season. And what this thread is showing is that most of our fans just accept nothing but mediocrity now. Losing and drawing pre-season games heading into a new season doesn’t help with confidence at all. Add the fact we have had months to sort new deals out and we’re leaving it so later again, shows nothing has changed. Moyes would have wanted new faces in the door and getting them up to the pace, and bonding with the squad.

Im backing us for Europe, 100% right now, cant wait.

Vault me.

Before a ball is kicked it’s worth assessing where the squad is in relative quality to everyone else. Then it’s worth reassessing once the window is closed. If we’re around 10th after the new signings then it makes Europe a slight possibility as Moyes can over perform his squad quality as shown here before and at West Ham. I’ll see what the squad is looking like at the end of the window.

We need to avoid the problems of last season which was starting with key injuries right up the spine. Branthwaite and Garner were missing and Keane and Iroegbunam came in and threw a disasterclass in first few games. Mangala and Branthwaite came back in and everything settled down but the damage was done. We also had too many concerns at right back.

If we can start this season with the first choice back 4 that finished the last one and Garner Gueye in front of it (if no one better arrives) plus Ndiaye and one of Beto or Barry upfront then it’s a more settled stable starting line up than anything we’ve had in ages going into a first game.

The lack of signings and squad depth at this stage is a bit of a worry but I'm sure that by the end of the window we will have a competitive squad ( yes I know that we need to hit the ground running for the first game and appreciate how frustrating this is.)

I'm not convinced that our immediate rivals are in any better shape ( although they may have bigger squads).

Wham have lost Kudos but signed a reserve full back.

Who have Fulham signed ?

Brentford have lost their manager , replaced him with a rookie , lost their best player and signed a washed up Jordan Henderson.

Wolves , sold their only decent player.

Brighton - who knows. TBF they sign players you've never heard of and they turn out to be great.

Are United and Spurs our immediate competitors? Ok they were below us last season but recent history suggests that that is an anomaly.

So , yes plenty to do but no need to panic ........yet!

Sorry, i thought i was talking to reasonably intelligent people who'd just got their knickers in a twist and could have sense talked into them.

Turns out i was completely wrong, wont try that again.

Lay off the crack.

How are they more equipped to deal with the season then we are? They dont even have a PL level team.

They have the numbers and have fully attacked the market.

Obviously they'll have players in their squads who aren't premier league standard but i think they've all made good additions and will be a lot more competitive than pervious promoted teams.

We have a squad of around sixteen first team players, which includes players like Coleman, Keane, Patterson, Tim, Chermiti, Armstrong, .

It's not great, is it?

One thing I will add is if we are gonna spend big which I believe we will do, it's in our interest to not overpay early in order to get a body in as that just sets the bar high for every further negotiation.

Both negotiating down the Alcaraz deal and doing the same for Barry rather than just paying the buyout - long term will ensure clubs don't take the piss in negotiations.

We paid Alcaraz' clause and left it last minute to do so. Spanish sides have crazy clauses, most think we've still overpaid.

*i dont care if we overpay today as long as they outperform the cost. But this 'good negotiation' you speak of...?

Not seeing that.

We’re dealing in pretty weak transfer rumours here, and that’s not really what I’m on about. The specific discussion I was referring to is whether we are / will be stronger than last year and I think it’s almost impossible to not be stronger, probably by a good margin.

Sure i understand. Going from dross to nothing (currently) when we could have had people in Jan, isnt inspiring me.

I take your point though.

Wouldnt say rejected was close to getting him was only because a real push by fulham to keep him he stayed. I still want see atleast two players in for the america trip. And i fully back fans angry about the situation becuae is such a massive window for us

He rejecred us mate. Like a bird agreeing to go on a date with you.

Then on the day before she tells you shes going with someone else.

Its rejection buddy.

I really don't think these things happened. As far as i'm aware we just triggered the option in the Alcaraz deal, for the set amount already agreed in January. Barry had a release clause but there's been nothing whatsoever to suggest Villarreal were ever seriously asking anyone to pay it. I don't say those things to criticise or moan, i'm just saying let's not create this narrative that we're being real hard negotiators now based on nothing.

Agreed.

You are massively overrating Wesley Zat, he is ok but nothing more and if you actually believe that Villa are going to just hand over their captain too us then more fool you tbh, proper clickbait nonsense that was.

I think McGinn links were from good sources? Wasnt it Joyce and Percy?

I never said Villa would "hand over their captain" ?

My concern is even making an enquiry.

Imagine building a 600 mill Stadium, charging the fans thousands for season tickets and hundreds for premium match day experiences and we left it too late and we only brought in Harrison, Coufal and Soucek. Haha. Pretty sure there would be murder.

Can see us bringing in 3 or 4 top players still, but we're taking an obscene amount of time to get things done.

Good job we've only got a £800m stadium then or we'd look really stupid

If you look at the last two seasons we've put a foothold down at lower midtable mate, in the second half of the season last year we were tracking being more then competitive for Europe, we have resources to spend, we have seen turnover so we have the scope to improve, when you look at fundamentals, the trend in upwards and we were about 10 points shy if even for Europe last season, i feel that is very achievable given the key enablers i mention heading into the season.

Injuries are key.

In 23/24 we basically played the same team most weeks and it really helped the team.

If Moyes can select a similar 11 most weeks with his big players in key positions staying fit most of the season then it’s absolutely possible.

I’ve watched too many Everton seasons though where the equivalent of Branthwaite Garner Ndiaye Barry all pick up long term injuries throughout the season and were chopping and changing far too much.

No the majority of their squad isnt PL proven.

Look at Leicester last season absolutely walked the championship and got bitch slapped back down into the championship. Burnley the season before smashed the championship sent packing back down.

Theres no proof that the players they sign will even work in the PL.

We have 20 senior players in the squad

Funny thing is though Keane would walk into Sunderland's team as their best CB.
